I have copied a will in .doc format into my multimedia and it appears in the multimedia, though only as an icon. The contents of the file do not appear in the various reports I have run on the selected individual Is there something else I should be doing? I have not excluded it from reports.
Just trying to get to grips with multimedia as I haven't used it before in version 4.

That is the expected behaviour, because the media file is not a graphics image format file.
It will open if you click the red triangular 'Open in Editor/Player' button when the icon is displayed.
The best way to add textual transcripts is to add the text to a Source Record > Text From Source field.

To show as an image, it has to be an image file. docs pdfs are not, so hence the icon.
Do you know how to convert the will to an image format?
Is the will a picture in the document or a transcription?
If it is the former, you might be able to extract the image out, if it is the latter, why not copy and paste it into the Text from source' field.

Thanks for your help.
I had hoped that the multimedia option would append the doc file to reports.
My file is a transcription but I probably have the original as several image files.
To get it into reports in the past, I have copied it into the notes field.
I managed to open/view the file by double clicking the icon.
To experiments! Back to the drawing board!

An approach that many users adopt is to include both the transcript and the image.
What is being recorded is a Source Document that certifies/justifies your Facts.
So create a Source Record into which the Source Document details are recorded.
Copy and paste the text from your .doc file into the Text From Source field.
On the Multimedia tab add links to your image file(s).
You can add many such media files if you wish.
Then against each Fact that is supported by the Source Record add a Source Citation link to this Source Record.
The Tools > Set Automatic Source Citation option can help automate this process.
Note that more than one Source Citation can be linked to each Fact.
