Starting afresh with v5.0
I have to admit I've hardly touched my tree these last few years (long story!). It's about 7000 strong and on v3.1 and the last thing I did was make a start with (that wonderful utility) Gedcom Census.
Now I want to 'start afresh' with v5.0... and divide the tree into 6; one each for my parents and the parents of my current and former wives. AND... I want to make full use of Nick's Ancestral Resources.
I only have one PC, and it would be nice to be able to run both v3.1 and v5.0 of FH and do a gradual transfer ... but I don't suppose that's going to be possible!???

Although you can't run both, I don't think that will cause you a problem.
You can open your V3 gedcom in V5, and then create exports for each of your new projects and create projects from them.

I would suggest that you maintain a single project containing everyone unless you have an extremely good reason to split. Much less hassle in the long run and virtually no disadvantages.

Yes, this topic has come up several times, and the usual outcome is that people regret splitting their trees, and finish up merging them back together again.
Unless you have some very special reasons, I would advise keeping one tree.
Instead, focus your attention on the new since V4 Project structure, and review the other Forum threads on splitting or not splitting.

Thanks so much for your kind, (and thought provoking!) messages Jane, Trevor and tatewise. I'll certainly have a re-think about splitting what I have... it's just that sharing with relatives (some current, some 'ex'!!) can be a little awkward at times!
Your comment is really enlightening Jane... that I can open v3 in v5 to create exports. This I must investigate further, even if I don't do the splits!
One thing I'm uncertain about is what, if anything, I should do with Gedcom Census data I've created. Not a very great amount, but as I want to start afresh using Ancestral Resources (and give Nick the reward he deserves!)is there somethng I should be doing first with the Gedcom Census data, and, indeed, the programme itself.
Very best wishes

Ancestral sources is an upgrade from gedcom census. On top of that, the information is saved in the family historian gedcom/project. Nothing is saved in Nick's programs. So whatever you have already done in Gedcom Census, you did to the gedcom and will show in FH, regardless of version and wether or not you have Gedcom Census or Ancestal Sources installed.
As to sharing with relatives, you can make a copy of the project and then use the tree split menu option to delete people that you don't want to share with others based on queries.

Firstly it is called Ancestral Sources. Gedcom Census didn't/doesn't create data of its own, it just adds census data to your family history file. So you'll find the information you added is in your file. The same applies to Ancestral Sources.
I'd suggest testing Ancestral Sources for a while with the Family Historian sample project or with a copy of your own project until you are certain that you are happy with the way the data is being recorded. There are lots of different options available that can change the way the data is recorded. The default settings are fine and you may be happy to stick with those. Also read through the Ancestral Sources help pages as well as the Ancestral Sources Knowledge Base on this site.

Thanks both for putting my mind straight! I've never been that good at understanding the workings of programmes and PCs (as you've probably gathered!)
Apologies Nick for my 'basic mistake'... but what a superb resource Ancenstral Sources undoubtedly is! I'll do as suggested as I've clearly got plenty of catching up to do.
Very best wishes
