Can you supply the missing words? We had distant relatives named Waters and there is a rumour of coal mines.

3 - pits South Wales Between Ferndale(?) and Mardy

Close(d?) one hundred years ago
Unreadable unreadable of one
unreadable (Mrs?) Charles(?) Waters/unreadable

Possibly the last two lines read:

former owner of one
was Charles Waters

Thanks both. Looking at it again this morning in better light I came to the same general idea. The first bit looks more like 'Name of'.
I wish that I could get the last bit but I have enough to work on. Now to find Mr. Waters.

The last word looks like Pit - compare it with 'Pits' on the top line - so it reads '...Waters Pit'.
