Having used FH from the start I have in the past created small ged files for different parts of the family and merged them into what has now become a pretty big main file.
I have never really used projects,however what I would like to be able to do is to create a project which would contain say the files for a particular branch of the family so they could be viewed and worked on. Is this possible or have I missed the point of project files.

I see no reason why you could not split off part of your tree and then make that file the basis for a seperate project which you could then work on.
I have several projects each of which are looking at a particular name in a particular area which I think may be relevant to my main file. When I have exhausted work on the project I then split off the part that belongs to my main file and then merge it in.
I find that approach much easier than doing all of the work in the main file especially as I am not sure how much relevant information I may find.
Obviously any additions made to the project would not be automatically reflected in the main file and vice versa.

It is simply that FH creates a skeleton folder structure that it knows about.
It still uses the same Gedcom (.ged) data file(s) that you would have used before.
It still allows you to organise your Multimedia image files in your own folder structure, but preferably within the FH Media sub-folder.
This allows relative file links that support copying and moving Projects without needing to remap Multimedia File Links.
For more information on what is involved with Projects, use File > Project Window and click on Tips for New & Upgrading Users at the bottom.
Then follow through all the help notes including Notes for Upgrading Users.
A bonus is that Project only features such as Charts and Family Tree CD & Websites and Project Management facilities become available.

So we were on the right track all those years before 'projects' with the individual ged files.
What did particularly worry me was where any media would go so it would retain its file structure even if moved but that question has now answered.
I think perhaps the grey cells are slowing with age..
