Please excuse my stupidity. I've not been able to find answers to these questions.
What I would like to know:-
1. Where are profile pictures shown at the top left hand corner of a post obtained?
2. How are they affixed?
3. What does UBBC mean?
4. I notice that research/surname interests appear at the bottom of most posts, how do they get there?

1. & 2. & 4.
The answer to these is slightly obscure, but is at the bottom of the Help page obtained by clicking Help on the left.
Click on My Profile on the left under Members Only, and then on Edit Profile bottom centre.
Under Signature you can enter your research/surname interests to appear at the bottom of your posts.
Under Picture you can choose a standard picture or use your own.
Click Submit Changes when done.
3. UBBC means Universal Bulletin Board Code
It is the method of marking text in posts by using bracketed characters.
e.g. [ b ] means start Bold and [ / b ] means end Bold.
