How do I get the report to show an alias name please? I have a James Evans also known as James Beckley

I have added the name James Beckley in the alternate names titles, but it is not showing up anywhere in the Narrative report. There doesnt seem to be a box to tick to show secondary names when creating the reports, just primary ones.

Many thanks

For the Individual Narrative Report it is possible to use the Report Options... Format tab to edit the text of the Record Heading. For instance, you can add %INDI.NAME[2]:ADORNED%, but I cannot see how to prefix this with 'aka' without that appearing for every individual.

Perhaps someone has a better suggestion?

Thanks Peter, I wondered if I was missing something somewhere but maybe there isnt a solution apart from changing his main name to aka...

PeterR was nearly there, and using the following expression should give you what you want:

%INDI.NAME:ADORNED% =CombineText('aka ',%INDI.NAME[2]%,' ','') (=LifeDates2())

if you also want any Name Prefix or Name Suffix to be included then the first data ref should be:

%INDI.NAME:ADORNED_FULL%

You could even put aka 'Other Name' in the Name Suffix field instead of the Alternate Name field, and then =CombineText('aka ',%INDI.NAME[2]%,' ','') is not needed.

The =CombineText function is more commonly used in Diagram Text Schemes.
It works by testing the 2nd Data Ref parameter, in this case %INDI.NAME[2]%.
If it exists with a value, then the the 1st, 2nd & 3rd parameters are combined as 'aka Alt Name '.
If it does not exist then the 4th parameter, an empty string in this case, is produced.

Note that you can use a similar expression in the Caption at the top of the Individual Property Box.
See Tools > Preferences > Property Box tab > Captions button > Individual box.

For reports it's worth also adding a Name Change event (even if you don't know a date as you can then source it and it will also appear in the narrative report, with a location for for example you can have From 1829 he appears as John Smith Doe.

See http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id ... iple_names

for more information and suggestions.
