Place names
Having read a number of threads referring to Place names and addresses I still cannot find any way suggested of being able to list all place names used whether in census ,births, baptisms, marriages or burials. I realise i can get census addresses (or should I say places)using the standard query Census Addresses but as people moved around so much in the 1800's we find sometimes that different branches were very close to each other and would like to sort tree members by place.
Is this possible? Be gentle with me as I don't have a clue how to write queries and would like a very simple (if possible) Dagwood friendly method.
Thanks

Do you mean in the whole file? If so why not just use the Tools/Work With Places?
If you want to list all the Places and the events try the All Facts Query

If you are using FH Version 4.1.3 a Fact Query can list Places and/or Addresses for any or all facts/events/attributes.
But, if that is not a possibility, the Standard Query Contains Text can be used to find all occurrences of any text, which could be a place name or part of an address. The query results are just the individual records, but you can turn on the Property Box while viewing the results.

There are a number of Queries in the Knowledge Base > FHUG Downloads > Census Records section at:
http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id ... susrecords
In particular the following may fit the bill:
Query:Individual ~ Ancestors' Census Places
Query:Individual ~ Census Addresses 1841 to 1911
Query:Individual ~ Census Place Lists 1841 to 1901

Jane,Peter and Mike , Thank you for your replies. Of the three the All Facts Query suggested by Jane was the one that fitted the bill perfectly but I will look at the others again to see how they might work for future needs . There is so much to learn about FH and the assistance given by you and others is of enormous help to relative beginners like me.
Thanks again
Dagwood
ps Is it possible to get the All Facts results to show Place names split into columns similar to other queries ie Place 1 ,Place 2 etc?

The short answer is NO you cannot split Place names into columns according to the commas.
You could add a Columns tab Expression of %FACT.PLAC:SHORT% to list the leading Place name up to the first comma, but that is all.

But if you have a spreadsheet program such as Excel, you could use the FH Query Menu to Save Query Result Set As... Comma-Separated CSV File.... Then open the CSV file in Excel and use the Data menu option Text to Columns... to split the Place column into separate columns, having selected Comma as the Delimiter.

Apologies for not having thanked you all for your replies before now. I'll try the CSV approach this weekend and get back if I have any problems.
