Can't find previous answer - Media Files

Post by goodwin2 » 25 Sep 2011 02:23

I thought there had been a screen shot showing how the file structure should be for the media files to be in the right place but my search here couldn't find it.

For some reason my file structure got changed as I was trying to clean up my 'just reintalled my operating sytem' project.

Now my ONLY ONE project does open correctly but the media file is apparently in the wrong place as I again have all the X marks.  I've tried to put the media file where it should be but without success so far.

Hopefully the .png file referenced above will show my screen shot of the file structure I now have for the media files.

As usual - your kind assistance is greatly appreciated.  In addition to solving my problem, kindly send along some medium length VERY GRAY hair to replace that which I have just pulled out.

Open windows explorer and go to the folder shown for the media folder in your project
eg
c:Documents and SettingsGenMy DocumentsFamily Historian ProjectsSherwood FH Rename July 2011Sherwood FH Rename July 2011.fh_dataMedia

are the files there if not copy them there.

How ever I notice you have moved My Documents within a folder called Gen this is probably not a good idea, if you want a Gen folder it would be better with in the My Documents folder rather than above it.

Sorry to correct Jane, but the folder hierarchy is perfect for a Windows XP PC in an account with username Gen.
There are two possible explanations why the Media files are not recognised.
(1)
If you are now using Windows Vista or Windows 7 then the folder hierarchy should be:
C:UsersGenDocumentsFamily Historian ProjectsSherwood FH Rename July 2011Sherwood FH Rename July 2011.fh_dataMedia

assuming your account username is still Gen. The Documents and Settings folder is now Users and Documents has lost its My prefix.
(2)
Alternatively, your multimedia image files are not located in the Media folder specified, but somewhere else on your PC.

In either case the solution is very similar.
Open Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) by clicking on Start > My Documents and navigate to your Family Historian Projects folder and then to where your multimedia files are located.
This path to these files will not match the path in FH Work with External File Links.
In FH Work with External File Links select the highest folder where the mismatch begins.
Click the Re-Map button, choose one of the Re-map ... options, and then browse to the folder where your multimedia files are located, then click OK.
Which Re-map ... option should you choose?
This depends on whether you have converted to Project folder structure or not.
If you have then choose Re-map within Project Data Folder to obtain relative paths within the Media folder.
Otherwise, choose Re-map to Other Location to retain absolute paths. The drawback of this approach, as you have discovered, is that when you move your data the path needs to be respecified in FH.

Thanks again to Jane and Tatewise my sanity, AND my media, have been restored! Hopefully I will never get my file structure messed up again.
