Does anyone know if a 'protege' on the 1891 census is someone unnoficially adopted? My husband's grandmother was born in London in 1884 but was in Kent with an unknown (to us) family in 1891. There is no father on her birth certificate so is it likely her mother gave her up? We can't trace the mother at all after 1884 and don't know why the child was in Kent in 1891.
