New PC - Photo's unlinked, How to link up again.
Hi,
Just got a new PC, all docs, photos etc transferred from old PC o.k.
Folder containing cropped photos used in FH is there.
When I enter FH, where the photo of an individual should appear, there is just a white rectangle with a cross in it and an error message.
I'm having to add/enter each photo again which is very time consuming.
Is there a quick way of restoring the link of an individual to their photo please?
Barbara.

First have you checked through the Knowledge Base advice on how to Move Family Historian Settings at:
http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id ... e_settings
Secondly, use Tools > Work with External File Links and you should be able to tell FH where your image files are now located.
Are you using the FH V4 Project structure?
If so then the whole project folder hierarchy should have copied across OK.
If you still using FH V3 style standalone GEDCOM, with absolute file paths to your image files then they will probably need to change as follows.
On Windows XP your file paths were something like:
C:Documents and Settings{username}My Documents...
On Windows 7/Vista the file paths would be like:
C:Users{username}Documents...

Hi,
No, I'm afraid I don't know how to use/or understand FH V4 Project etc.
I think I must be using the standalone GedCom method.
I just haven't a clue as to how to go about it. I'm sure a lot of people find the written instructions fairly easy to follow but I'm struggling with some of it.
Thanks for trying to help anyway.
Barbara.

OK, have you moved from Windows XP to Windows 7?.
Where are your cropped photos?
Lets say they are in:
C:Users{username}DocumentsFamily HistoryPhotos
Open FH and use Tools > Work with External File Links.
You will probably find lots of X marks against the photo files and folders.
I suspect its still shows your Windows XP folders:
C:Documents and Settings{username}My DocumentsFamily HistoryPhotos
Select the Documents and Settings folder.
Click on Re-Map button and Re-map to Other Location.
Then Browse For Folder by clicking on the left-hand white triangles until you reach your photos folder and click OK.
Now all the X marks should have disappeared and all your photos will be back.

Hi Tatewise, thank you for the instruction.
Yes, I've moved from Windows XP to Windows 7.
My FH photos are as shown:

Can I apply your instruction to the above?

Yes, Work with External File Links will probably look like this with lots of X marks:

Select Documents and Settings and click on Re-Map button and Re-map to Other Location.
Then in the Browse For Folder window click on barbara, then My Pictures, then My Pictures, and finally Crop.
Click OK and Work with External File Links should look like this:
C:

Crop
and all the X marks should have gone.
Click OK and all your photos should be back.
