Entering christenings

Post by gillno1 » 09 Sep 2011 09:30

I have got back to Gt Gt Gt Grandfather, christened 21 January 1775. There does not appear to be a way of entering this as a christening, only date of birth. How can I get round this? At present I have entered Born January 1775. Is this the only thing possible? I have several other relatives where I can only find christening dates. It would be nice to be accurate.

On the Fact Tab, select Add and select either Christening or Baptism from the the list of events.

As far as I know Baptism and Christening are just two words to describe the same thing. Indeed, if you go though old registers you will sometimes see pages headed up as Baptisms and sometimes as Christenings. The point is that it is probably better to stick to one and list all Baptism and Christening events under the same heading - be it Baptism or Christening. That way it will be a lot easier to display the information in diagrams/trees and easier to write queries.

I believe there is/are differences between the two - possibly self choice verses mum & dad & the top layer of the wedding cake and a party.

I personally use the excellent Ancestral Sources baptism which, if you want to use it allows you to estimate a birth date from the baptism/christening alsong with residence, occupations and associated people.

Thanks folks, that is very useful. I will check out the options and make a decision.

Just in case you are not familiar with Ancestral Sources please refer to the Home page for the free download.

There is also a separate Forum for Ancestral Sources and much advice in the Knowledge Base.
I thoroughly recommend its use for entering Census and Baptism/Christening data.
