I'm thinking how useful it might be for family members to be able to see a diagram of ancestors with say just their names, their years ie 1833-1905, and their birth town and county. I can't figure out how I'd even start to create this though. Any suggestions would be most welcome.
Many thanks

Ancestral origins diagram?
One way of doing this is to start with an ancestors diagram, select the standard text scheme 'Name, Dates' and then make a simple edit to this to add a birth line.
The 'Getting the most...' book under Help covers text schemes well and there is also a help page entitled 'Create a simple text scheme' which will step you through the process involved.

Ancestral origins diagram?
Here are a few more ideas:
(1) When you say Ancestors do you mean Relations?
In FH Ancestor has a very strict definition, i.e. direct parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, ... - NO aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.
If you want these then use the All Relatives diagram.
(2) For the diagram to include the ancestors/relations of both spouses in a marriage, then either select both Individual Records or their Family Record as the root of the diagram.
(3) As delwoodman says, once the diagram is displayed, use Diagram > Options and untick Save as default at the bottom.
Open the Text tab, select the Name, Dates Text Scheme, and click Edit.
In the left-hand pane select Birth Event and click > button in the middle to add to Items in right-hand pane.
In the Add Item to Text Scheme window untick Date and Notes, then click OK
Near top right, change Place Format: from Tidy to Medium, which will display Birth Event Place details up to the 2nd comma.
Click OK and OK again to see the results.
N.B. This only works if you enter Place details using the layout 'Town, County, Country' but if you are not so formalised, then the results will be inconsistent.
(4) Finally, use Diagram > Save Diagram As > Custom Diagram Type and give it a memorable name.
Thereafter you can always regenerate this style of Diagram using View > Custom Diagrams and choosing that memorable name.

Ancestral origins diagram?
Many thanks Derek and Mike. I've started working thro' page 86 of the book which is ,I think, the section Derek was referring to.
Mike, it is ancestors only I want to show. i think All Relatives will be too confusing. I'll go thro' your instructions after I get thro' the section in the book.
Thanks again
Dagwood
