Re Installing F.H. Files
Hello once again
I have at last bought a new PC. I have installed FH 4.1.3 and I would like to install my files which are currently backed up on an external hard drive. My question is where do I put my files in My Documents and what's the procedure to get the Records Window up when I switch on? I know I had great difficulty in October last year sorting out my problems. My thanks in advance.

Please see Move Family Historian Settings in the Knowledge Base, which should be of some help:
http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id ... e_settings
The FH Help item What's New in Family Historian 4.0? contains:
http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id ... e_settings
The FH Help item What's New in Family Historian 4.0? contains:
There is an option in Preferences (Startup tab) to use the Record Window as the initial window, instead of Focus Window.
Re Installing F.H. Files
I'm afraid I couldn't use this method. I have the file on an external hard drive connected to my PC. Can I copy my file and paste it C: drive then onto FH in MY Documents?
Re Installing F.H. Files
If you are using projects you can copy and paste the folder ' Family Historian Projects' from your external drive to you new 'my documents'. This would also contain any linked media.

Re Installing F.H. Files
On your new, presumably Windows 7, PC you should have a folder created by FH at:
C:Users{your-user-name}DocumentsFamily Historian Projects.
On your external hard drive, if you were previously running FH V4 with the Project folder structure, there should be a backup of the ...My DocumentsFamily Historian Projects folder containing your Project(s).
Copy all the contents of the ...My DocumentsFamily Historian Projects on the backup external drive to the C:Users{your-user-name}DocumentsFamily Historian Projects folder on your new PC.
That will re-establish your Project(s).
As PeterR says, FH Tools > Preferences > Startup tab has the tick option Display the Records Window, instead of the Focus Window, at Startup.
Do you need to re-establish any custom settings for Diagrams, Queries, Fact Sets, etc, etc??
Have you got a backup of either,
C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataCalico PieFamily Historian folder on Windows 2000 or XP,
C:ProgramDataCalico PieFamily Historian folder on Windows 7 or Vista?
This is where PeterR's advice to see Move Family Historian Settings in the Knowledge Base applies:

Re Installing F.H. Files
Hi Tatewise and PWE
Many thanks for your help it's very much appreciated. I have successfully managed to install/transfer my file from the external hard drive to desktop PC big sigh of relief from me. One small point I now get the Project Window up when I switch on. I have to double click on the file in order to go to my Family Historian Projects Family Tree Records screen. How can I avoid this screen appearing. I want to get straight into the Projects Windows when I open Family Historian. Once again thank you for your help I am very much in your collective debt.

In the Project Window select the Project you want to open by default, click More Tasks and then Default Project.
Alternatively, right-click on your preferred Project and select Default Project from the popup menu.
Alternatively, with your preferred Project open in the Focus/Records Window, use Tools > Preferences, then on the Startup tab click the <<Select button, and select Make Current File the Default.

Hello again,
I have followed your instructions and now I have Family Historian opening into the Family Historian Family Tree window displaying all my records. I cannot thank you all enough. I can now get on with adding new records which I received a few weeks ago. I am again in your debt Many, many thanks.
