Tidying up after file merges and A.S input.

Post by Dagwood » 08 Jul 2011 22:12

Having got off to an untidy start to my project I see there are a number of file merge records within individual records. I only noticed these at the last file merge and now I'd like to remove these if possible. I'd appreciate advice on whether this is possible and if so how best to do it and whether there are drawbacks to doing so.
In a similar vein I notice that my earlier problems with Ancestral Sources have resulted in various log entries which seem to be spread across a number of dates and I get confusing info, eg while A.S. records show I'm at record 48 I have just had a message telling me I have input 25. Is it possible to clear the logs and what effect would this have on the census data now recorded in each individuals record e.g. would the census information and occupations vanish? Finally, is it worth me clearing A.S completely and starting all over again before I go any further?
Any advice appreciated

The log is just a log of what you did in case you need to remember. Deleting them won't change anything. If you want to delete them then just go into the Ancestral Sources->Logs folder (in your Documents folder) and delete the files in there.

I can't see any reason to reinstall Ancestral Sources from what you've said.

Thanks Nick, could you tell me whether the deletion of all or part of the log will alter the number shown as Source ID on the main form ie will it reset to zero or a number which reflects the deletions carried out?
Could anyone comment on the first part of my original  question ie the wisdom of and,if ok, method of deletion of the list of file merge records shown against people after a number of merges?
Many thanks

No as I said, deleting the logs won't change anything. Ancestral Sources looks in your family history file to see the last source id used and bases the new source id on that.

I'll let someone else answer the merge question.

The Source ID is not determined by AS but is the next available Source ID in FH.
The AS Logs will refer to the number of data entries it has logged that you have performed via AS.
However, you may have created Source Records directly within FH  and these will increment the Source ID.
Note that all other record types (Individual, Family, Multimedia, etc) each have their own separate ascending series of Record ID.

By File Merge Records do you mean Source Citations that appear in the yellow Sources pane to the left or below the Property Box for various Facts, etc?
Like all other Sources, these remind you where the associated information came from.
There will be only one actual Source Record per merge, and you can see them in the Sources Records Window probably with a Type of File Merge.
If you really want to you can simply delete these Source Records by selecting the record and using Delete.
No harm will be done, you just won't know in future, which merge yielded which data.
