Set the person you want to be the root, by selecting the person and then from the edit menu, select file root/set file root.

Thank you for your help Jane I have done that but know when I go into the index of names in the colum that say's 'Relatationship to Root' the colume is empty .

For example I though when my mother or fathers name appeared on list it would say mother or father, grandmother etc.

Sorry Jane not very good at explaining my self.

Thank you

Are you using V4.1.3? I assume you have set yourself as the root?

Does the relationship show up in the Focus window (top left)?

The relationships certainly show up on my version.

'I have done that but know when I go into the index of names in the colum that say's 'Relatationship to Root' the colume is empty.'

Try using the Column editor to check the column is defined correctly.

Try editing the column settings and resetting to installation defaults.

I don't think the Relationship to Root column expression has actually been stated.
It should be: =Relationship(FileRoot())

To examine this, ensure the Individual Records window is displayed.
Use menubar Lists > Configure Record Window Columns....
Select Relationship to Root in first Column of right-hand pane, and click Edit... button.

This is a stab in the dark, but when the Relationship to Root column is empty, have you just clicked on that column header in the Individual Records window?
If so, then all Individuals with no relationship are sorted to the top, so the column therefore appears empty.
However, if you scroll to the bottom of the column, or hold down the Alt key when you click on the Relationship to Root column header, the relationships are revealed.
