I have six trees that I am trying to merge but when I do this all the census facts, marriages etc are not merged so I finish with one name but six lots of facts for the same event.
How can I avoid this?

May I suggest you read through Getting the Most From Family Historian.

When you have matched up Individuals, click on the + next to their name to expand the details.
Then match up Events and other details in a similar way.
