Media file

Post by Castleford » 15 May 2011 22:23

I am currently work on my first FH project, transferring from Generations, and doing a major source re-visit as I go. Three generations in, I have realised that the Media file would be better organised, if I could make separate folders within it for Census, Certificates and Photos. However, if I do it now, retrospectively, the file paths will not be recognised and my docs won't attach to the relevant facts. Short of going thru and re-attaching every one of several census and certificate pics, is there any quick fix to this problem.

You should be able to use Tools > Work with External File Links.

Select the media files you want to move, just as you would in Windows Explorer.
Hold the Shft key to select an adjacent set of media files.
Hold the Ctrl key to add or remove single files from your selection.

When you have selected all your Census image files then click Re-Map and choose Re-map within Project Data Folder.
Choose the folder where you want the files to reside, and Make New Folder if necessary.
FH does not move the files, so use Windows Explorer to move the files.

Click Refresh in FH and check there are no X against any media files.

To add to Tatewise's suggestion, I wonder if it might be slightly better to do this the other way round - i.e. move the (using his example) census images first in Windows Explorer and then use Work with External File Links to re-map them. This is because the images that you moved in explorer will show up as broken links in Work with External File Links so it will be easy to see which images you need to remap.

Thank you both so much, I have just completed this exercise using your very clear directions - something I had no idea it was possible to do. Taken me about 30 mins, (using Nick's method) and moved nearly 100 documents, and they have all re-appeared attached to the right people and in the right place. Also, which was the main point for me, the Media file is much easier to navigate, now I have been able to separate the different kinds of pics.
Many, many thanks.
