Transferring/copying data
I run Family Historian on my PC and I have just installed it on my laptop. I now wish to copy all my family history data from my PC onto my laptop. I understand that when I copy/synchronise my data I must remember to copy the whole project folder, not just the gedcom or backup file.
I have tried 'file > export' but this does nothing for me and gives no result. I had also wondered about trying to transfer it by putting the data onto a CD. If necessary, I can transfer from my PC by email (once I know how to gather the data) or memory stick. Although I am a frequent computer user I am not too aware of the more arcane aspects of its language. Also, I would not know a gedcom file if it came up and bit me!
Can any kind person guide me in copy my data onto my PC?

If you have V4.1 just use the option on the Project Window/More Tasks button to copy the data to your USB key.
On the other PC simply use windows to copy the folder from your key to the Family Historian Project Folder which is in your Documents folder by default.

Wouldn't the use of DropBox be an answer also? I followed the recommendations in this forum when I got a netbook and created a folder in DropBox on my PC then opened that folder in my netbook and all was there and remains syncronised at all times. I also use it for storing all photos, census and certificate copies and avoid the problems with links back to multimedia.

Thank you both for your suggestions. I shall try Jane's idea first.
I have no idea what a Dropbox is or how to access it, can you be more specific please?
All this will have to wait for a week or so as I am due a spell in hospital.

Hi Les,
If you Google DropBox you will be able to open a free account which enables you to upload folders containing whatever you want synced across two or more computers. Logging into the same account from another pc or notepad you will see the folders exactly as loaded. Any amendments/additions etc will be in your dropbox when you go back to the other m/c. The instructions are easy to follow when you open an account and to start you get 2Gb storage free, you can uppgrade to a Pro account should you need a lot more but this costs £'s.
If you invite someone to share your folder (eg say it has census forms and family trees you wish to share)and they open an account (even a free one) you get about 250Mb extra added to your account. I'm up to about 3Gb now but as I only use it for downloaded census forms, birth certificates etc and Gedcom files I'm only using about 1Gb. I cannot see myself ever needing to upgrade the account.
In summary I have one DropBox account with shortcuts on two m/c's and whichever m/c I use I get the same data on the other m/c without having to do anything. Great!
Hope all goes well with hospital stay

Many thanks; I have now successfully copied my FH data onto my laptop. I will try Dropbox when I have a few moments.
