Selectively hide dates for individuals

Post by djac » 20 Mar 2011 18:01

Just wondering if there is a way to 'hide' dates (birth, marriage or death) for selected individuals when producing charts. I am using FH v4 with the latest update.

I have been asked to provide family tree charts for a christening in April, and some family members have asked that their date details are not shown.

I could remove the dates, then print the charts and put the dates back in. However it would be nice if there was a flag or something like that I could switch on for those individuals, then I would not have to worry in the future about having to remove and replace dates.

I suspect this is something of a long shot.....hopefully I'm wrong!

Your idea of a flag is exactly right.
You could add a Flag to those Individual records who want their details hidden.

In the Individual Records window, or in a Diagram, select all the Individual records needing details to be hidden.
Hold down the Ctrl key as you select with your mouse in order to highlight multiple records.
Use Edit > Record Flags  and tick the standard Private flag, or create a New one, and click OK.

In the Diagram chart you want to produce, you need to create a Text Scheme that uses this Flag to hide details.
In the Diagram window, use Diagram > Options and in the pop-up window open the Text tab.
Select a Text Scheme that offers the details you want in each box by default.
Click Clone button, give the copy a New Scheme Name and click OK, then click Edit button.
Select an Item Used in This Text Scheme such as Birth that you want to conditionally hide, and click Edit button.
Tick the Flag Condition option, select your Record Flag name, select must be not set, and click OK.
Repeat these last two steps for each conditional item.
When finished, click OK, untick Save as default, click OK, and check your diagram details.
Use Diagram > Save Diagram As > Custom Diagram Type and give it a Custom Diagram Name.
Then you can regenerate this diagram with conditional details whenever you wish.

You can alter who has details hidden or shown by changing whether they have the Flag set or not.
