Making a file of differences between gedcoms

Post by mcws » 31 Jul 2004 11:17

I find comparing and merging gedcom files very useful, but I would also like to make a list of selected differences which I can send back to the originator of one of the gedcoms.

I cant find any way of printing or otherwise recording the details in the merge/compare display. The only option it seems to offer is to perfom the merge!

I have thought of marking all identical records for discard/delete then going ahead with the merge. Making a list of the names (or id numbers) of the merged people. Then going back to the two original gedcoms and doing some report using the list of changes, but this seems somewhat longwinded.

The help file seems to promise an example of recording an audit trail, but I could not find it. Chapter 13 of the manual does not appear to provide the answer.

Is there a smarter way to pass just the details of differences back to the owner of one of the gedcoms?

Its a good idea.  I can't think of any way of doing it at present, but I've logged it.  Why not add it to the FHUG Wish List?

The Audit Trail reference simply meant that by keeping your backups, and by comparing, you had a means of working out what was changed when.  It didn't mean that you could keep a printed report.
