Buying FTM 2011 for ';free'; Ancestry sub
I have just bought Family Tree Maker Platinum 2011 in order to get 6 months subscription; it was cheaper than taking out a year's sub. Has anyone else done this, and are there any potential problems? I don't want to use FTM, as I am quite happy with FH but I have to load FTM in order to activate Ancestry. I wanted to be able to give FTM to my brother afterwards - will this work?

Just as an aside - many Public Libraries in Britain have free access to Ancestry for anybody who has joined the Library.

I did that last year and had to install it to use the activation. Personally I would not inflict FTM on anyone so I just used the subscription and un-installed it.
It was very slow and used 1/2 a Gig of disk space.

Yes Jane, that's what I intend to do too. I was just a bit worried that I might be stuck with it; but now I know I can uninstall it without it affecting my Ancestry sub, I am happy!
Thanks for the help folks.

I also bought FTM for the free few months of Ancestry, at the same time I also had an offer from Ancestry which I wanted to take up and when I rang them they said that I couldn't have both offers running together but if I rang when their offer ran out they would activate my FTM code over the telephone. Shouldn't really critize, but isn't it an awful programme, so many people praise it to the skies that I was expecting something really special.

Sorry Margaret, just seen your reply. I used to use FTM a few years ago (a free copy) and I quite liked it but hated that it tied into Ancestry. I am much happier with FH, although i feel I have such a lot to learn still. I find it much more complicated but also truly comprehensive! Lucky you being offered a discount sub from Ancestry. I've never been offered any discount. I emailed them asking if there was anything going, but they said no! I also emailed them to ask if I could get a discount as I was a National Trust member but they said I couldn't as I'd had a previous Ancestry membership. So tight!

I went to WDYTYA live just to get the ancestry discount on renewals, they also offered them for new members. I do know that the saving on my annual worldwide renewal paid for our trip to London and a good bit more, also I enjoyed seeing the various stands and listening to the lectures.

Sorry Irene, just seen your post. Sounds like you had a good deal! I contacted Ancestry to ask if I could have a discount if I rejoined them, and they said no. I then asked if I could have a discount as I was a member of the National Trust, and they said no, as I had been a member previously!! Miserable lot!
Anyway, I have a lovely six month sub through FTM which is languishing in its box unused! What a strange world we live in...
