I have imported a gedcom to FH from Ancestry which gives a fact type of residence. Is it possible to change all the residence references to census in FH , or will I have to re enter each one.

If your file only contains RESI events for Census information you can simply use a text editor (PSPad is better than Notepad) and replace 1 RESI with 1 CENS using case sensitive replace.
If you do have a mix then you can use the prompted replace or list function in PSPad to list them and replace the ones which need replacing.
