Where have my photo's gone?
Hi.
I tried to add photos to about 12 records yesterday, first time I'd tried it & I thought I'd managed it o.k because all the records showed the photo.
That is, until I opened up this morning and all the 12 records just showed a sealed envelope with the message 'Unable to load object.Error on file open'.
I'm not too clever at this, it's probably something obvious that I've missed (should I have clicked 'save' somewhere?)but i'd appreciate some advice please.
Thanks
Barbara.

Please can you confirm you are using a Project and that you are opening your gedcom using the Project (and that you have V4.1 installed).
When you adding the pictures did you let FH copy them in to your project?

Also note that adding photos to your records does not usually 'import' the photos into FH.
The photo files must still exist elsewhere in your PC somewhere.
You haven't deleted your photo files between yesterday and this morning?

With V4 it does by default, as long as you are working in project mode it copies the images to the media folder. Also note that adding photos to your records does not usually 'import' the photos into FH

Where have my photo's gone?
Hi Jane, thanks for the reply.
I don't quite understand about opening the Gedcom using the Project.
This is what I did:
1. Clicked on Multimedia button in the Focus Window.
2.Clicked on 'Add Media'
3. Clicked 'Insert from File'
4.Clicked on selected Photo.
5.Clicked 'Link to Face' then 'o.K'.
All seemed to look fine but i've obviously got it all wrong.
Yes, I am using FH4.1
Barbara.

It sounds as if you are doing it correctly Barbara.
Sorry to disagree with Jane, but if Barbara is not using V4 Project Folders, but still using FH V3 folders, then FH does not copy the photo into the Project Folder because it does not exist.
Furthermore, even with V4 Project Folders the user can choose Don't Copy.
Since Barbara does not mention the V4 Copy Media Files? option, I suspect she is still using FH V3 style folders.
Barbara ... Is the photo still present in the PC folder it was originally in when you added it to FH?

Where have my photo's gone?
Hi Tatewise,
Re the file where the photos for FH.V4.were kept.
I have a folder in 'My Pictures' in which I have been keeping photos I've cropped, for use in Family Historian.
I used 12 photos from this folder to add media to Family Historian.
Then I opened a new file in the FH folder where my Gedcom file is, then copied the 12 'Crops' I'd used & moved them over to the FH folder.
Could this be the cause of the problem ?.
I didn't think it should, because 'crops' I used are still in the original folder - I've just copied them to the new folder.
However, I'm not too technical so I fear I've made a bit of a mess of it.
My only way out would appear to be to delete all media input yesterday and start again.
Barbara.

Yes, it seems that in cropping/copying/moving your photos, the references in the FH Multimedia Records that point to your photo files no longer point to the correct place.
Therefore, it may be best to delete those new Multimedia Records for your 12 photos.
Before proceeding, it is strongly recommended that you create a Project for your Family Historian database.
Please use Family Historian > File > Project Window > Help button > Tips for New & Upgrading Users > Notes for Upgrading Users at the bottom.
Read through that entire section about how to create a New Project from your existing GEDCOM database.
If you have any questions then post them here.
Then use the Project Window > New Project button...
Once you have your new Project Folder then you can start over with adding the Multimedia photos as before.
This time however, FH will offer to copy your photos into the Project Folder where you are less likely to tamper with them by mistake.
In time you will find the Project Folder concept has many advantages.

Where have my photo's gone?
Hi Tatewise,
Many thanks for your detailed reply.
I need to sit and absorb the part about creating a Project and learn how to do that.
In the meantime, I have deleted the copies of my 'crop photos' which I used for adding Media and I've re-input the photos from the original 'crops' folder, using the same method that I used before.
So far, so good, fingers crossed all be well!! I have closed down and restarted a couple of times and the photos are still there. [rolleyes]
However, I have copied & pasted your notes about 'Creating a Project', to help me get the hang of it.
Thanks again for your help.
Cheers
Barbara.
