Problem linking settings with new laptop
Hi all,
I'm hoping this is an easy one. All of my settings, boxes, flags etc. I have copied over to my new computer running Windows 7. I have copied them into the correct place, OS(C:) ProgramData but can't make them show permanently into my diagrams.
The programme does recognise where they are since they show temporarily when choosing View> Custom Diagrams > Including Flags, but then disappear again when choosing a new person or different diagram.
I hope it's just a case of telling the programme to always link to the settings, but just where please?
PS I am using FH4
Thanks
Mary

Mary, may I clarify exactly what you have done?
1) You were running FH V4.1.3 on your old PC and have installed it on your new Windows 7 PC using an Administrator account.
2) You copied your entire C:My DocumentsFamily Historian Projects... folder from old PC to new PC.
3) You copied your entire C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataCalico PieFamily Historian... folder from old PC to C:ProgramDataCalico PieFamily Historian... folder on new PC using an Administrator account.
Please also see the Knowledge Base advice on Move Family Historian Settings at:
http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id ... e_settings
This gives extra advice about Tools > Preferences, some Diagram Settings, and Record Window Columns.
If you still cannot resolve the problem then please post more information here.

Thank you for your comments, yes I have done 1, 2 and 3 exactly as you have described since I followed the directions from the link that you have given.
I believe that it is a setting that needs tweaking since the files are most certainly being accessed by Family Historian, as advised that if I use the 'View Custom Diagram - including Flags' then all icons show. Also the queries are all there too. So the files are in the correct place.

You appear to have transferred your FH set-up correctly.
Can you please give a bit more description of what menu commands and other options you are using that are not working correctly, and exactly what is disappearing, or are they just greyed out.
Is it only Custom Diagrams that are giving problems?

Looking through I think nearly everything else has transferred ok.
Have just done a test - When I do View> Custom Diagram> Including Flags, and the flags show, then I check the Diagram Options, Boxes tab, all settings are there, but when I check the Diagram Options Boxes tab, there are no settings there.
Sheesh! just sorted it, none of the 'Saved as Defaults' were checked - knew it must have been something simple that was just escaping me.
Thanks for your help, it's always good to be able to talk it through with somebody to see what you've missed.

Excellent - we have both learnt something.
The Knowledge Base advice on Move Family Historian Settings at:
http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id ... e_settings
does give a clue under Diagram Settings where it talks about Save as Default Settings.
The Diagram Default Settings are saved in the Registry and not the C:ProgramDataCalico folder.
So when moving from PC to PC you must follow those instructions to create Custom Diagrams for the four Standard Diagrams and Export them from old PC; then Import them to the new PC and use Save as Default Settings.
I suspect you did not perform these important steps as per the Knowledge Base.
I am glad it is fixed now.

Bit scared of touching the Registry so you are correct.
