Dear All

Does anyone have any thoughts on when to stop entering relatives ?

I want to make a 'Pruned' version of my Tree and the FH Relationship column is a good starting point to show who is directly related.

The problem I have is that the FH relationship identifies people such as 'Husband of 1st Cousin twice removed' but not his parents or siblings.

I'm curious to know how other FH users decide when to stop 'branching out' so to speak and whether the FH Relationship function can be used to identify the more distant connections.

Alternatively is there a way of displaying common ancestor to the root on the Indvidual Records list.

I normally export my tree for others by using an query which does
All relatives for the person I am sending to (or there first shared ancestor, if I don't have them in the tree).

Then excludes any Private people, and optionally any living people (depends who I am sending to).

and then removes any people not found by the query along with sources and family records etc with no links to them.


If you search for Common in the Downloads you will find 2 queries which can be used to find common ancestors, which can be used to highlight a diagram should you want to.

Thanks for the pointers - unfortunately the two queries don't really do what I'm after.

There is a 'How Related' option in Tools that does identify the common connection between two people even if they are not directly related. I was hoping to use something like this to identify the link between the file root and any individual in the file.

Do you think this is possible ?

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that the How Related... option on the Tools menu will find direct relationships only for those individuals included in the standard query Relations and 5 Nearest Relationships or any other query with the same row filters:

If you save such a query as a custom query and add a fifth row filter Add if an ancestor of anyone in the current result set and run the query with your file root as the Starting Person, there will probably be several rows for which no (direct) relationship is shown.  The How Related... option would also find only indirect relationships between the root and those individuals.

That's what I expected until I tried it. With some of my more obscure relationships it says that there is no direct relationship between the two people but then it correctly identifies the person that they both connect to.

Any clues as to how this is done ?
