Uploading GEDCOM to Ancestry

Post by ken » 10 Jan 2011 06:18

Hi,
I'm trying to upload my GEDCOM file to Ancestry without success and after I contacted them they advised the following:

It could be that your gedcom file is not completely up to date and is not a valid gedcom 5.5 file format. Please download and install a free two week free trial of family tree maker 2005 from the link below.

Answer Title: FTM 2005: Is Family Tree Maker available for download?
Answer Link: http://ancestryau.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ ... faqid=1919

As I don't wish to download the FTM trial at this time to create the GEDCOM file are there any other options available? Has anybody else had this problem uploading a Family Historian GEDCOM to Ancestry?

Thanks

Ken

Thanks Jane,

I've tried a couple of times with my original GEDCOM and also with a reduced file size with all the excluded boxes ticked on the export GEDCOM dropdown box but I still get the same error message from Ancestry when I try to upload it.

Ken

It is some time since I uploaded mine but I remember that Firefox would not do it but Internet Explorer worked. Have you tried an alternative Browser ?

I have split off a new file for Ancestry and uploaded it with out error.

How big is the file you are trying to upload I just did a 500 person one with out error. I never upload my whole tree as I don't want to give it to Ancestry and the T&Cs imply you are giving them unlimited rights to your research information.

Hi Peter,

Just opened Ancestry through Internet Explorer and uploaded my GEDCOM without a problem.
Thanks for your help - very much appreciated.

If you have a Firefox Add-on called (I think) IE View, then you can just right click on a link and select to open it in Internet Explorer.

I do this when I select 'Upload a GEDCOM' under the Family Trees tab in Ancestry. Saves messing about going back to the start menu on your PC to find Internet Explorer.

Never had a problem uploading a gedcom to Ancestry through Firefox. 15000+ individuals 8.5mb file size, all exclusions ticked in the export options.

Where am I going right?[wink]

The Firefox Add-on is called Coral IE Tab.
Simply click on Tools > Add-ons > Get Add-ons tab and enter Coral IE Tab in Search All Add-ons box and click on magnifying glass to search.
There are two variants IE Tab 2 and IE Tab +. Click on their title to read short description.
Click on Add to Firefox button to install.
Then when you right click on hyperlink you get the extra option of Open Link in Coral IE Tab.
Also you can toggle Firefox/IE by clicking on Firefox icon in bottom right corner of window.
