.NET Framework update fails to install properly
Posting this here because I read somewhere that AS requires .NET Framework, and perhaps Nick or someone else might have an answer.
I have a persistent problem on my laptop running XP / SP3 and a couple of different flavors of .NET Framework where one of the updates for .NET Framework 2.0 fails to install. I've read some fixes on the net and nothing I've tried so far gets rid of the problem. So every week when Windows updates, the system tries to install that update and again it fails.
If I get a chance to get the laptop and the desktop set up next to each other, I'll post the specific KB number and the link I found to the fixes I've tried, but in the meantime, I wonder if anyone else has seen the problem and if so, how they fixed it.
Thanks.

.NET Framework update fails to install properly
I had this same problem (also on XP SP3). After many abortive attempts I succeeded by totally removing all versions of the .NET framework and then reinstalling them one at a time. I think I rebooted my machine after each version. I know it took most of one Sunday morning to fix it.
I do recall that the fix didn't work for me.

.NET Framework update fails to install properly
I'll try to post the update number. One fix I read was the one Andrew talked about -- removing all the .NET Framework version and reinstalling one by one, rebooting in between. I may have missed a step, however, so I'll try again when I have more time.

.NET Framework update fails to install properly
Jan
If it helps I currently seem to have the following versions of .NET framework installed:
Framework 1.1
Framework 2.0 SP2
Framework 3.0 SP2
Framework 3.5 SP1
However the 1.1 version does not seem to have a file size with it so I am not sure if it actually present.
As I say I cannot remember how I achieved this and looking at my downloads I have downloaded several fixes for the .NET framework but I am afraid that I cannot remember which ones worked - some certainly did not. I had an error message with the code 0x643. I certainly did a Google search on that and found the solution but I do not remember which one.

.NET Framework update fails to install properly
Some background that may or may not help. The versions of .Net that you require really depends on the software on your PC. For example, I only use .Net version 2 for Ancestral Sources: although I could just of easily written it to use version 4, I set the bar lower so that the majority of users would already have version 2 on their PC.
If you wanted to be fully up to date with all versions you would need:
.Net Version 1.1 SP1
.Net 3.5 SP1 and follow it with this update - 3.5 is built on versions 2 and 3 so I'm pretty certain they get installed with it. 3.5 SP1 is pre-installed with Windows 7.
.Net version 4
Probably a good idea to follow each install with a check for Windows Updates just in case there are any updates that are not included in the downloads above.
Hope this helps
Nick

.NET Framework update fails to install properly
Thanks for your comments, Nick. That's very helpful. I know one of the other programs I use only requires 2.0.
The update is:
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP (KB974417)
The computer is running XP Pro SP3.
Edited to add:
Poking around a bit, I found a forum with this suggestion:
I'll have to check this out when the laptop is on.

It's very possible that I had updates which installed out of order.1. Uninstall KB976569 - No Reboot Required
2. Install KB974417 - No Reboot Required
3. Install KB976569 - No Reboot Required
Apparently KB974417 needs to be installed before KB97656
I'll have to check this out when the laptop is on.
.NET Framework update fails to install properly
I have tried to download Ancestral Sources, which it does but states that it needs to install also Microsoft .Net 2 framework but when it tries to download the SP2 for this it says it cannot install dependencies and I should do it manually!
And when I try and install a new version manually it says it is incompatible with a previously installed version.
According to Add or Remove programmes I have .NET 1.1 but with no file size and .NET 2.0 Service Pack 1.
I cannot get any further, so please help.

Andrew, have you tried the possible solution mentioned by jmurphy on 27/11/10, above? There is more about this Microsoft Update problem at:
http://social.answers.microsoft.com/For ... ed81ec307b
Several people seemed to find the solution worked OK.
