The short cut on my desktop no longer brings me to my main FH page. Instead I am confronted with the Project Window and behind this a blank F.H. Project window, then there's a 'Please confirm what you wish to do' options are 'Exit' or 'Cancel' How can I get back to my main window which shows all my records. I would appreciate any help. My thanks in advance.

The most likely reason for this is that you have moved your Family Historian Project Folder.

Do a search on your PC for *.ged to find where you have moved the folder to and then use the More Tasks button, Project List/Choose Project Location and point the location to your Family Historian Project Folder.

Hi Jane I've followed your instructions but have stumbled at the last hurdle. I've reached the 'Browse for Folder' box which lists all C: drive etc. In Program files I've selected Family Historian clicked on this but nothing happens. I'm sorry to be so slow at this. Please send me more information. My thanks again

Have you actually done the search? What was the result?

Hi Jane,
Thank you for your reply, yes I've done the search and found the *.ged file under C:Documents and SettingsMy Documents FH ProjectsFamily Tree01.fh_data 189KB Gedcom File. I have followed your instructions 'More Tasks button, Project List/Choose Project Location and point the location to your Family Historian Project Folder' but I have been unable to follow the rest of your instructions 'Point the location to your Family Historian Project' How do I point to the location. My apologies once again but I am stuck at the moment and unable to add any further family history details. Should I uninstall the programme and start from scratch? I can only see this as a solution. My thanks once again for your patience.

Code: Select all

C:Documents and SettingsMy Documents FH ProjectsFamily Tree01.fh_data
The path looks wrong, is that the path exactly as you have it on your PC?

I would expect something more like:

Code: Select all

C:Documents and SettingsMy DocumentsFamily Historian ProjectsFamily Tree01Family Tree01.fh_data
What else do you have in the folder above the one where the gedcom file is?

Hi Jane
I've attempted to attach a screen shot of the location showing the folders. I hope this will be okay.

I suspect you renamed your 'Family Historian Projects' folder (in My Documents) to 'FHProjects'. Family Historian has then recreated the 'Family Historian Projects' folder (but empty) which is why you have both the FHProjects and the Family Historian Projects in your My Documents.

Try the following....

1) Run Family Historian
2) In the Project Window click on the More Tasks... button
3) Choose Project List (3rd option) and then 'Choose Location for Projects...'
4) In the 'Browse for Folder' window that appears, select the 'FHProjects' folder in your My Documents (you will need to navigate to it) (Make sure it is the FHProjects and not the Family Historian Projects folder that you select).

All being well you will then see your project listed. Double-click on it to open it. (You may wish to make this the default project by clicking on it and then clicking on More Tasks... button and select 'Default Project')

I hope this solves your problem

Nick

Hi Nick
Thank you for your reply unfortunately I have stumbled at the last stage. I have attached a screen shot showing the message that appears. I have been unable to proceed beyond this point. I have seriously considered unistalling and re installing the program in order to get back to where I was some time ago. I have installed FH 4.1.3 onto my laptop and I fear that re installing onto my desktop will not go ahead due to restrictions of the licence. I have become increasingly frustrated by my inability to solve this problem from all the postings on my problem. Any further advice will be most helpful.Image

It doesn't look like you're carrying out the 4th stage correctly. Make absolutely sure that it is the FHProjects that you have highlighted in the 'Browse for folder' dialog before you press OK. i.e. DO NOT select the 'Family Tree 01' or the 'Projects Sample'.

Hi Nick
I've successfully carried out your instructions, sigh of relief all round. How can gain access to my records without going through the steps again. How can I get the shortcut back on my desktop. Please forgive my faltering steps.

I assume that when you run Family Historian you are getting the project window popping up with your project (Family Tree 01) listed. If so then click on the project in the list (don't double-click) and then click on 'More Tasks...' and choose 'Default Project'. This should put a tick next to the name of your project in the list which means it should open automatically next time you run Family Historian. This should also mean that your desktop shortcut will work again.

Hi Nick,
Many, many thanks for your patience. I have followed your instructions and I have managed to get my Family Historian back to the way it should, be including the missing shortcut. Sanity returning, many thanks once again.
