';Structured'; Narative Report

I've received reports from other peoples geneaology programs in a format something like:
1
1.1
1.1.1
1.1.2
1.2
1.2.1
1.2.2
etc I'm sure this has a name but I don't know what it is?
I'd like to something similar with FH, is it possible without a lot of configuration?
If not is there some alternative to give a narrative report some generation based structure?
I've created a split tree file of 197 individuals, all descendants of one ancestor. If I select that ancestor and choose create narrative report by generation, then add all the other people and create the report it just seems to display the individuals after the first person sorted alphabetically (and a 397 page report!), which makes it a bit hard for the reader to see the family structure.
I've done a seach on reports, and looked at the 'Getting the Most From Family Historian' book, but can't find anything useful. I must be missing something obvious, as it's a pretty routine thing to want to do I would have thought.
Any advice please?
