I want to create a diagram of the ancestors of my grandchildren but to include in it my grandchildren's aunts and cousins (in other words my other children and grandchildren), ie to expand the diagram by adding to the grandchildren's generation and their parents' generation.

Can anyone tell me if I can do this please, and if so how?

Many thanks

Unless I am missing something the All relatives diagram based on each of your grandchidren will give you what you need.

I think I understand Martin's problem.

If you choose any one Grandchild and view the All Relatives diagram, you get all the Ancestors of that Grandchild (both Paternal & Maternal).
You also get all the Descendants of all of those Ancestors, which will include all the Uncles, Aunts, and Cousins of the chosen Grandchild.

These Uncles & Aunts are Martin's children and their spouses.
The Cousins are Martin's other Grandchildren, but for them only their blood Ancestors are shown.
So, for all but the chosen Grandchild, half their Ancestors are missing, i.e. the Ancestors of the spouses of Martin's children.

Unfortunately, you cannot select all the Grandchildren (using Ctrl and Click) and then view All Relatives, which I think is what Martin wants.

By selecting each Uncle & Aunt with no Ancestors in turn, and using Diagram > Insert into Diagram > Ancestor Tree you can add the missing relations via Aliases, but it looks messy.

Thanks for your advice.

I'm afraid I didn't explain my problem as well as I should have done! What I want is a diagram with all my grandchildren included at the root level, with their direct ancestors (not all relatives, which would be just too many people).

Choosing one grandchild as the root of an ancestors diagram is a starting point. I had hoped to be able to then add that grandchild's siblings, also those grandchildren's first cousins and their parents (my other daughter and her husband). In my database I have only my and my wife's relatives, not those of my two sons-in-law, so addition of the sons-in-law would not entail any further ancestors.

This is an exercise for the grandchildren of 'who were our Mums' ancestors'. Maybe it is beyond the means of FH to do it!

Regards, Martin

It sounds to me, that what you are looking for is an 'Ancestors and Descendants Diagram' based on one of your daughters.

In Martin's case the solution is quite straightforward.

He should select himself and his wife in either of the following ways.
(a) Hold down Ctrl key and click his box and his wife's box on any diagram.
(b) In the Families Records window select his own spouse couple record.

Then choose Ancestor and Descendant Diagram from menu bar. Hey presto!

The key to this is that Martin and his wife are the only ancestors of all their children and grand-children in Martin's database. (He does not have his son-in-laws ancestors.) Therefore, Martin & his wife and their descendants are the same individuals as their grand-chidren's ancestors.
Furthermore, all Martin's & his wife's ancestors are also their grand-children's ancestors.
