Unwanted link

Image

Can anyone please tell me how I get rid of an unwanted link? If I have captured the image correctly you can see I have by accident got duplicates of my great grandma and grandfather. I entered in grandma's marriage details and must have hit something wrong as it asked if I wanted to link it to the spouse. I had said yes a second after realising I should have said no. Now I have my original pair plus an extra grandma one side and a duplicate grandma and grandfather on the other linked all together.

I have seen an unlink option in the edit menu. Is this something I should try? Or is getting an earlier backup from my external drive the way to go?[oops]

I think you might have two Family Records.

If you go to the Family Tab and find the two families for William and Mary, and select both, then select edit/merge you should be able to merge them together, alternately using the unlink should be fine.

Also if you notice something wrong, don't forget you can use the undo option from the edit menu to unravel back to the mistake.

Hello,
Sorry to intrude here. But I have exactly the same problem, and I haven't got 2 families. So am not sure what to do?

In the case of the diagram in the first post..... Is Mary Shelton in fact Mary Withers? If so then I would have thought you might be able to delete Mary Shelton - you don't seem to have much info about her - presumably because you later realised she should be under her maiden name of Withers?

Or maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree [lol]

When you say you haven't got two families, where are you looking, check the all the spouses to see of any of them have information in the second family tab.

On the original one, I have just twigged that William and Mary Shelton are siblings, so all that needs to be done is to delete the family as spouse record for both of them.

Sorry not to have got back sooner - I was away a couple of days. I'll try to make it clearer.

William Shelton and Mary Withers are man and wife. But they have a daughter Mary born 1841 which is confusing the picture. I didn't have Mary Withers death details until recently and made my mistake when inputting them. The middle 2 entries (with William in white and Mary Withers on his left) are complete and correct but it looks like FH has made 2 extra Mary's using Mary Withers dates and the extra William.

I have checked and do not have 2 families Jane. Mary Withers shows correctly. Mary Shelton now has Mary Withers birth and death dates so she appears to have been overwritten and linked with her father. If she ought to be deleted presumably I can then just put her in again with correct birth date?

Before I proceed I would be grateful for advice. It will teach me to watch what I am doing!

Sorry, forgot to double check William Shelton. He is now showing 2 wives! Mary Withers is correct with all details and children and Mary Shelton just shows Mary Withers date of birth and death.

Jane, I must apologise for gettng in a complete muddle over this. You were quite right - Mary Shelton (born 1841) and William ARE siblings. I'll get this right if it kills me!

Could you kindly clarify deleting the spouse as family for both of them? I don't quite understand it. Do you mean the second entry for Mary?

Thank you!! Everything is back as it should be, links all gone and I have restored Mary Shelton to her correct birth year.
I have learnt a lot through this - be more careful in future!
