Moving projects folder

Post by Briand » 23 Sep 2010 18:03

Hi,  On installation, the projects are stored in a new default folder called 'Family Historian Projects' in My Documents.  I can see how to change the location for new projects via the Project Window, but if I want to move projects already created and stored in the default place, can I just move these project folders to the new desired location?  Presumably all associated data is within the individual project folders?

Thanks, Brian

Yes that's right you can just move the project folders to the new location.

If you have V4.1 you can also use the Copy Project option on the More Tasks menu to copy (and possibly delete) the Existing Projects over before changing the default location.

Moving projects folder

Has anyone got any experience of using the 'Copy Project' function, as described by Jane, to copy a project between a desktop PC and a USB stick (to use on a laptop), and effectively keep a project in sync across two PCs.

Most of my FH work happens at home, but occasionally I want to take my project with me on my netbook; ie: Work on desktop > copy project to USB > work on netbook > copy files back onto desktop etc

I don't want to just keep my project on a USB stick, as there's the risk of a corrupt file on the USB or loosing the stick.

You can simply copy the whole folder in windows explorer or using the copy option, but personally I much prefer to use Dropbox to look after it for me, see the synchronisation article in the knowledge base.

Thanks for the advice.  I'll leave dropbox for now...

I have copied my Project into a new folder in My Docs.  When I want to be away from home, I'll just copy the folder onto my USB stick, as I won't necessarily be online with my netbook.

I've now had a look at Dropbox - it's easy to install and removes the issue of always copying to and fro with a USB stick.  Just need to remember to fire up the laptop before leaving the house!

Thanks for the recommendation![grin]
