Recording medals and awards

I wouldn't have been asking this question until recently, but I discovered some second cousins who have the MBE, CBE and OBE amongst other awards, and I was wondering how people recorded things like that.

There doesn't seem to be any obvious standard events that fit, and I'm reluctant to add custom events due to potential compatibility issues exporting the GEDCOM. Is custom events the only way to go?

Apologies if this should have been in the V4 Usage forum by the way.

You could use the Possessions Standard Fact, and enter the Medal as the Value and edit the Sentence by replacing possessed with was awarded or something similar.
You will have to do this for each such Medal Fact.

Otherwise, you have to use Custom Facts.
There is good set in FHUG Downloads > Fact Sets > Military History Fact Set Mark 2.

If you did go down the route of custom facts and were concerned about compatibility, it's my personal feeling that custom events are more likely to be accepted by a recipient program than custom attributes. Thus you might have a custom event for (say) 'Medal Awarded' and add what the decoration was in the notes for the event.
