* Face Link Issue

With previous versions I made constant use of the ability to link an area of an image (mainly lines on Census sheets) to a person/family (I later make use of this as a hot link on my website)

But with v4 in the multimedia window it now insists on the area being marked being a 'face link' and when I highlight the area I want linked the program then uses that part of the census as the persons 'face' in diagrams etc

Could anyone tell me how I can make the linked area just that, i.e. a linked area and not a 'face' please?

Not sure if i'm missing something or will have to go back to v3

Yes, I link each image to a source for adding as a citation to 1 or more facts

In v3 I used to additionally manually add a link to the multimedia image against the fact (in the all tab of the person/family properties) and could then go into the multimedia screen and assign a selected area to that link

But in v4 it only lets me add the area link as a face link...

Maybe I misunderstand the question

Just to clarify

If, say, a census sheet has a married couple and some children I'd create a source linked to the image and use this as a citation for the census on th family and each child etc

I'd also link the image directly to the census for the family and each child

Then in multimedia window i'd mark an area on the image aginst each manual image link. One covering the 2 lines for the father/mother, and one for each child line

If you need to use the Link to Face option, have you tried ticking the Exclude from Diagrams and Exclude from Reports options near the bottom right of the same Edit Media Item window?

When I try to use the Edit Media Items window to link the area I have 2 problems

1) It seems I'd need to create seperate source for each child, not a problem in itself but a pain with the number of census sheets I already have setup

2) The linked area is against the source, and it has to be against the individual/family as in v3 for me to be able to use it as I want. So even if i exclude from diagrams/reports, it doesn't really solve the problem.

The way my wesbite works is I post-process the fh web site so that each image on a fam/ind sheet becomes clickable. The full size census sheet opens in a new window and then you can hover over a line in the image and if the person is in the tree somewhere you can click on the line and it takes you to their fam/ind page.

Am going to create a new face link and check the gedcom to see if there's someway I can manually edit it to work like v3, I assume it must be storing it differently

Media linking does not create sources. What exactly are you seeing on the All Tab?

Link to Face in V4 is identical to V3 link to Area (just remember to exclude the link from Reports and diagrams to avoid it being used as a diagram or report image if you don't want it).

You need to Select the Image then Add link to face, and select the person you want to link to and then exclude it from diagrams/reports as you want.

Have worked out what's different between v3 and v4, and therefore a workaround

In version 3 the linking didn't add the link to the persons multimedia tab (at least the way I could do it in v3), so it never tried to use it as a persons image

In v4 when I create a face link it's also appearing/adding a link it to the multimedia tab in the individual. Which is why it's using as a picture for the person

So after creating my link in media window I just have to open the record I just linked, and delete the link from the multimedia tab. Having done this it remembers the link for my purposes, but doesn't show it as a persons picture

Damn, don't know what went wrong but now it's lost the link

I'm going to give up and use v3 to make the links, it's much easier!

Have found a solution

The problem is that with v3 I could create my own media link against a fact (in the all tab of the person/family) and then go into the media window and by clicking on the link I'd created on the left then I could draw a frame (or whatever it's called) on the image and it would be associated with the link i'd highlighted

With v4 it insists on creating the link for you (be it person, family, note etc) so I can't associate a frame with the media link I've created against the census fact.

I can get around it by editing the gedcom in a text editor and moving the 'face link' from the person/family into the census fact entry for the person/family.

Far from ideal but saves having to re-install v3 I suppose

Rather than edit the GEDCOM file, you should be able to move the relevant link as desired using either the All tab or the Records window.

This Thread raises an interesting point. I would like the ability to highlight certain areas in documents. But a 'face link' is not really appropriate as it seems to me to be designed to provide a passport sized photo of an individual.

Would it be better to have a separate document highlighter? It might, for example, allow for varying shapes to match irregular text extracts and also allow for more than one highlight per page.

Maybe all or part of this is already available although I obviously haven't found it!

In FH v3, when you came to add what it calls a New Frame & Link/Note you would have been faced with the following 4 options:



Which option did you choose?
I presume you chose an Individual for a child and a Family for the parents.
You would then have to select the appropriate child or family from a list.
Alternatively you might have chosen nothing (note only).

FH v4 is exactly the same, except that it calls the framing option Link to Face, but offers exactly the same 4 options.
Another cosmetic change is that the Individual Properties box in v3 had an Objects tab, which in v4 is called the Multimedia tab.
The only other difference that has more impact is the Focus window that shows face/census images, but as I said if you open this Multimedia tab and click Edit you can tick Exclude from Diagrams and the face/census image will vanish from the Focus view.

In both v3 and v4 it seems that the same GEDCOM is created although the names of things have changed, and the Focus window reveals what what was hidden in v3.
Are you sure you did not get face/census images in your Diagrams in v3.

Never had that pop up, I was using one of the frame tools to the right of the one you have selected in the image

In that case I believe you can do in FH v4.1.3 exactly what you did in FH v3.

(1) Use the new feature you have discovered to add a Multimedia image to a Fact.
i.e. Open the Individual/Families Properties box, select the Fact, click the Show Media camera icon below, and Add the Multimedia Record.
(I think this option should allow a frame to be added just as in other Edit Media windows).

(2) Choose the Multimedia Records window, select the Multimedia Record used in step (1), click the menu bar View Multimedia camera icon and choose View Media For Selected Records.
In the new Multimedia Window, select the Multimedia Record in the top left pane to reveal Linked Records & Notes in the pane below.
Select the Individual/Families Record to which Multimedia has just been added.
Click on the View Thumbnails icon (4 little boxes) to enlarge thumbnail to full size image, and Zoom as necessary.
Click the Convert Simple Link to Face Link icon you identified in your last posting (not the Add Link to Face icon).
Then you can add a Frame to the Multimedia Image as you desire, and Save the GEDCOM file.

This process adds the following GEDCOM text to the media OBJE:
1 NOTE
2 _ASID 2
2 _AREA {1971,2792,2211,3112}

I hope this lets you achieve what you want.

Am currently using Peter's method as i'm doing them on-bulk as I have a lot I haven't done recently, but will look at using your way when I'm adding them again thanks

Basically I'm browsing thru the census sheets just adding them as a face link, then opening the person/family record and copy/paste/deleting the link from the person/family into the relevant census fact

When I've gone thru all the census sheets am going to see if i can do the same with birth certificates etc
