Multimedia Records - Link/Note
I must be getting old...
Can someone please explain what a Link/Note entry within a Multimedia record is?
The entries are:
Format
Title
File
keywords
Link/Note
Most of my multimedia records have them but there are also some missing - and I can't find a way of recreating them.

Multimedia Records - Link/Note
You need to open a Source Record that links to the Multimedia Record.
One way is to choose the Multimedia Records Window, select to highlight the Multimedia Record, and use menu bar option to View > Record Links, then select to highlight a Record and click the Go To button.
Open the Record thus selected and choose the Multimedia tab.
Select to highlight the Multimedia Record you started from, and then click the Edit button.
Ticking any of the three options Exclude from Diagrams, Exclude from Reports, and Use Note as Caption will create a Link/Note field in the Multimedia Record.
You can do the same using the Multimedia Record Property Box and selecting the All tab.
Right click on the Record Name and choose Add Note > Add Link/Note to this Record if required.
Right click on Link/Note field and choose from the options to Add Source record, Add Exclude From or Add Use Note as Caption.
Hope this helps.

Multimedia Records - Link/Note
In GEDCOM an individual, source, etc. can link to an image but there isn't a link back from the image to the individual or source. The link/note is a Family Historian extension which provides a link the other way so that it can show you who/what is linked to the multimedia.gihe said:

These link/notes become important when you have group photos where you select areas of the image and link them back to individuals. Each of these links are recorded as link/notes and you are able to record notes in these links if you wish. Within the file the dimensions and co-ordinates of the frame around each individual are also recorded as part of the link/note.
If you start with an image and link it to a source then Family Historian creates a blank link/note. Somewhat inconsistently (in my opinion) if you have a source record and using the record window you link to an image the link note isn't created.
Hope this helps

Multimedia Records - Link/Note
Hmmm, still confused! It's probably best if I show some screenshots.
Here's a normal multimedia record

..and the corresponding source

Now, here's the one that doesn't have a Link/Note

..but it seems to have a source just like the first example

I tried to follow Tatewise's instructions and manually adding a link/note to the record - but I get this, where the source ends up becoming a 'child' of the Link/Note parent

Any advice would be appreciated!

If you view the image in the multimedia window and then click on Multimedia menu and select 'Add Simple Link' then choose the source it should create the note/link.

I should add that you may not get too much benefit from the link/note, it depends on what you're doing. I know that in the early days of Gedcom Census I didn't create the link/notes and a user complained that a column they had added to the multimedia records window didn't show data for their census images. Try adding a column with reference:
OBJE.NOTE2[1]
and you'll see that those without the note/links will be blank. In later versions of GC and in Ancestral Sources the link/notes are always created.

gihe is right there is something wierd here - I think.
Most of my multimedia records have links attached. If I open the record window for multimedia and select a multimedia record and then open the multimedia window I can see the link/notes attached to that record.
If, when viewing the record window for multimedia I select a multimedia record and then open its property panel I can go to the 'all' tab and also see those links/notes. But, and this is the problem, not all of the multimedia records which show link/notes in the multimedia window also show them in the property panel all tab.
So,some multimedia records show the link/notes in both the multimedia window and the multimedia all tab while others only show the link/notes in the multimedia window and not in the property panel all tab.
I believe I may have found an anomaly, which may relate to this,by adding multimedia to a source.
If I add the multimedia to a source via the source property panel then all is well and the link/notes appear in the multimedia window and in the property panel all tab. However, if I add the multimedia to a source via a right click on the source in the source record window then the link/notes do not appear in the all tab of the multimedia property panel but do appear in the multimedia window itself.
Am I right about this or am I barking up the wrong tree??

No I couldn't repeat that when I just tried it. The note/link was created but didn't appear in the multimedia window either. However, as I mentioned in my first post to this thread I do think it is odd that starting with a source and adding media to it doesn't create the link but starting with media and adding it to a source does, even though these appear to be identical actions. I did report this to Calico a few years ago. However, if I add the multimedia to a source via a right click on the source in the source record window then the link/notes do not appear in the all tab of the multimedia property panel but do appear in the multimedia window itself
Cheers

Thanks all - I guess I'll leave it as is. Got other things to worry about, like converting all my census entries to single-sheet sources instead of one source for an entire census year.[eek]

I have been using Gedcom Census v6.0.6 for some time, and am now playing with Ancestral Sources v1.1.0 to see if I like it. I do not use Link/Notes and was therefore surprised to encounter them for the first time using Ancestral Sources. Would it be possible to have an option to not create them in Ancestral Sources please as I am at present deleting them manually? In later versions of GC and in Ancestral Sources the link/notes are always created.

Why do you feel you need to delete them? They don't do any harm and the extra text added to your file is so insignificant as to be irrelevant anyway.
If you add images to sources using the properties window or from the multimedia records window in Family Historian then it creates the Link/Note records so I'm just mimicking what FH does.

On the subject of Multimedia Link Notes
What is the significance of the two different ways a Link/Note is displayed in FH ?
'Link Note--------'
ie in inverted commas and no brackets
AND
Link Note -------('')
brackets and inverted commas after the note, the note itself is not contained in inverted commas
I have exported records to another program to create web pages (ie TNG8) and the format of the Link Note affects the subsequent import to TNG8 of the FH gedcom.
