Family Historian User Group

Apologies if this has been covered a zillion times before.

I am building my own web site and would like to have a section on my family history. I can post a family tree PDF to site now (wow!) but it would be good to be able to get more information down, show some reports on individuals etc. I was thinking about whether there is some type of hosting service available where I could point my site to. I could then update the hosting site every time I update FH. Or may be there is some other way of doing it......or more depressingly ....no way of doing it. Any ideas ? Thank you.

There are several progams out there that will allow you to create your family tree on a web page. The majority of them will take your GEDCOM file - so it is a fairly easy job to keep it up to date.

As to which to use it will depend on whether you want to have a freebie or to pay for it. It will also depend on what your host will be able to support.

If your host will allow PHP to be run then you might like to consider phpGedView - certainly as a start considering that is free. Otherwise I would suggest that you do a search on the Internet and take it from there.

Sadly, Demon, whose server runs my e-mail doesn't support PHP. The concensus of opinion on the 4 variations on one of my family sites reckon that Ged4web gives a pretty good cross-section of information and flexibility.
Admittedly, it does produce a lot of html pages but once they're done, then using one of the many free FTP programs available (I favour Core FTP Lite) it's a relative simple task to change them. Even using a dial-up modem although broadband does make a bit of a difference.
Legacy has a good range of options for page design too, as does RootsMagic but Ged4Web has some nice touches which make it a good overall first choice.
