Ahnentafel numbers in Records View?

Post by Saltrams » 14 Aug 2010 11:42

The nearest answer I can find to my question is the thread 'Ahnentafel numbers' at http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cg ... y&num=3601 which is fine but relates to reports.
I would like FH4 (4.1.3 currently) to be able to show the Ahnentafel number of any individual in the individual's record. So, as I am the selected home or root person of my tree, FH4 should be able to return the Ahnentafel number of any ancestor in a field in their record - ideally a Fact although the precise field is not important to me. Then, without having to ask for a report, query or diagram I can just see that any ancestor has their number somewhere in their record.
Is that possible or do I just not understand the software well enough?
Thanks everyone [smile], Laura

You can use the Configure Columns dialog (see Help for Records Window) to add a column to the Records Window using one of the expressions which Jane provided in the thread referred to above:

Code: Select all

=AhnentafelNumber(FileRoot(),%INDI%,1)

Thank you! That's brilliant, I did it (surprisingly). Two questions then;
Will the column stay there now or do I have to load it each time I open FH? and,
Is there any way of making that information appear in the focus window and property dialogue?
Very happy with the way it is though, thanks again, [grin], Laura

I tried to add a field to the Property Box in the Focus Window but it wouldn't accept the code. Does the code need to be changed or can't I add the code there?

I suspect that the property box, will only allow you to include maintainable fields.

The column will stay in the Records Window when you reopen FH, but I suggest you preserve your Configured Columns as follows.
While in the Configure Columns window, click on the Save to Query button and choose a name such as My Columns in Individual Records then click Create.
Now use File > Import/Export > Export > Query to select the Query just created and Export it as a file into your Project folder, where it can be backed-up along with all your other files.
If you ever upset your columns or have to re-install FH, then you can Import the Query and run it to restore your Configured Columns.

It is possible to add the Ahnentafel Number to the Caption of the individual's Property Box (via the Property Box Preferences).  For example, I've currently set my Individual Caption as follows:

Code: Select all

%INDI.NAME:ADORNED_FULL% (%INDI.NAME._USED%/%INDI.NAME.NICK%) [=RecordId()] {=Relationship(FileRoot())} <=AhnentafelNumber(FileRoot(),%INDI%,1)>

Brilliant! That last explanation was exactly what I was after, thank you so much. I've pared it down because I don't need the Record ID but the principle of what to do was the important thing to learn.
I will also ensure that I preserve the column view as described.
Thanks again everyone - I wish I knew something clever that I could help others with !!
