Downloading ';Getting the Most from Family His

Post by LesNo1 » 07 Aug 2010 17:27

I am still unable to crack the secret of downloading this book. I am using Windows XL and Microsoft Office Word. When I click to download the book, I get no option of downloading to a PDF file or query as to where I wish to download it - it immediately downloads into Word. I have tried using Adobe but it declines to recognise it.

Any one with any ideas please?

You may find Foxit Reader is better than Adobe Reader:

http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/

If you have FH4 installed, the book 'Getting the Most from Family Historian 4' should be on your hard drive and should open from the link in the Help menu.  Similarly 'Getting the Most from Family Historian' should have been installed with FH3.  It is also possible to download the version 3 manual from FHUG:

The actual problem is you have associated PDF files with Word, it's not a Family Historian problem at all.

I presume you mean you have Windows XP.

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307859 or
http://www.fileinfo.com/help/windows-ch ... ogram.html

to learn how to change the program associated with PDF files once you have installed either Acrobat reader or FoxIt

Thank you all for your helpful comments.

In the efvent I installed foxitsoftware.com as PeterR suggested. Now, when I click on Getting the Most from Family Historian 4, I get 215 pages downloaded onto a foxit page. Unfortunatelt, each of the pages is blank! Any ideas where I go next?

Very frustrating.

Try the Adobe Reader, which is what PDF files are designed for.
I've never had the need to use anything else.

By all means try Adobe Reader, but I find Foxit Reader works much better, and faster, and uses fewer PC resources.  Pages 2 and 4 (of 215) are (deliberately) completely blank, but I find all pages are displayed perfectly, and all links work OK too.

I'm not knocking Foxit, or any other PDF reader.

My first choice for any new type file I download is the program it was designed for. Then if I'm not happy with that I will go searching for something else.

My thanks, once again, for all your help.

I think I have now found the root cause of my problem - but not the answer.

When I bring up and click on Family Historian in my Start menu, it shows 5 (sub) programs, one of which is 'PDF. Getting the Most From Family Historian 4'. Clicking on that brings up Adobe Reader and a dialogue box, which reads
'There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and ould not be repaired'.

As I have been unable to download the book since I first got Family Historian by download some months ago, I suppose that there was an error in the download at that time. Can anyone tell me what my next step is please?

Next move for me would be to rename the corrupt file, add OLD to its file name. Then reinstall the program. If that fails contact Calico and request a copy by email

Perhaps I should have recognised the problem earlier but the problem was nothing more than the file I had downloaded was corrupted in some manner. I have now been able to download the book.

It remains only for me to thank you for your interest in my problem.

I suspect at some point 'word' opened and saved the file and corrupted it. So once you had a proper PDF viewer the new file opened fine.
