Me again! I have been sent a GEDCOM which has a common ancestor and want to attach it to my tree. I thought it would be a simple matter of importing the data and linking the relevant person via the Link Existing Individual option in the spouse/child field.
it seems not. I have found the Merge and Compare facility but dont understand where I do the link.
Help!

Linking new GEDCOM file data to an existing tree
The Merge/Compare dialog is designed to handle importing data where some parts of the imported data needs to be merged (e.g. some records in both files are about the same people, or some source records are about the same sources).
You can use it to append (simply add new data without merging any records). Just make sure that all records in all tabs are unmatched before clicking 'Merge' (F.H. may tentatively match some records where in fact you may know that they are different people). If there are some matches which shouldn't be there (and don't forget to check each tab in the dialog!), the fast way to unmatch the lot is to use multiple selection in the lefthand pane (click on the first row, and then press-and-hold shift while clicking on the last row). With all rows selected, click on the Unmatch button. Do that for each record tab. Then click Merge.
Once the new data has been merged in you can link up the new people as appropriate.
I'd suggest you make sure to do a backup though before starting, just in case.
Incidentally, the match score column indicates how confident F.H. is that a record pair should be matched. Any value under 100 should be checked, as that indicates a low level of confidence. Click on the score column heading to sort by that column, making it v. easy to locate low-scoring matches. That's assuming you have any matches at all, which you may not.
