I don't suppose you can work out the sequence of steps required to repeat this error? I've had a handful of reports of this sort of error but haven't been able to find the cause yet.

If it is of any help, I get this error when pasting data such as an address or ref ID. However, if I wait a few seconds it clears itself.

I've had this error occasionally when copying & pasting long occupations from 1911 census transcriptions (at least I think that's what triggers it) Can't pinpoint the exact moment the message is triggered however

Nick,

This time it happened I was entering the address by finger. Entered a couple of characters and up popped the Error Message. The only way I could clear it was to restart the program. I have had instances with copy/paste as well.

Next time it happens I'll post it on here with the sequence that caused it.

By the way set up is Win7 (32bit), AS v1.0 and FH 4.1.3.

The error message is from the main census grid (the DataGridView it refers to) and appears to be from a cell which has a drop down list in it (DataGridViewComboBoxCell) so it is odd if it is appearing when you're typing in an address into one of the text boxes above.

Thinking back, I probably did paste the occupation immediatley before starting to type the address.

Keep getting the above error message. Happened this time as I entering the address.
It's just happened again on a 1911 Census.

The order of data entry:
Loaded Census image.
Copy & Paste Ref ID.
Copy & Paste Address
Typed in Place info.
Selected Person.
Copy & Paste Relationship. (Governess)
Copy & Paste Occupation (Teacher Domestic)
Clicked on Industry Box and up popped the error message.

Cleared error message.
Entered Industry (Typed in Servant)
Error Message reappeared.
Cleared message.
Removed the word Servant
Error Message reappeared.
Cleared message.
Clicked on Employ Status dropdown menu and chose Worker.
Error Message reappeared.

Clicked on Auto text then Save caused error message.

Finally.
Clicked on Save, Error message appeared again. Did this twice then got message that Gedcom file had changed by outside source. Cleared that message and the error message appeared, cleared that, clicked on Save and Gedcom was updated with the information.

Also flipping backwards and forwards between this page and AS caused the Error Message to appear everytime.

This was the first Census entry today.

Started AS again. Entered another 1911 Census, using same order, no problems this time.

I wonder if its something about the 'Teacher Domestic' that you pasted in. Where did you copy it from?

Findmypast.com

Pasted 'Card And Photographer Mount Maker' on the second entry.

I'm wondering if there were hidden extra characters being pasted in which caused the error. I've tried pasting all sorts of things to try to cause the error but still haven't seen it. I don't use FindMyPast so I can't test that.

Could the message 'The GEDCOM family history file has been changed outside of Ancestral Sources and will be reloaded' be triggered by the FH Autosave?

I deactivated Autosave when I installed FH.

Just checked and it's still deactivated.

There is an issue with A.S. v1.0 that if the save takes a bit too long it can think that the file has been changed by another application (reported to me by David Dewick). I suspect that because the error message appeared during the save it delayed things sufficiently for this to happen. This issue is hopefully fixed in the next version.

It does seem as though you are managing to repeat the error which is occuring when Arthur Verney's occupation is pasted in and you move to the next cell. Please can you check that if you start a census and paste this same occupation from the same original source (web page?) into the occupation field that this error occurs once you move the cursor into the next cell in the table? If so would be able to send me the web page by email (assuming its Find My Past then I don't have a subscription so can't check for myself). e.g. if you're using Internet Explorer 8 then click on Page->Send Page by Email. My email is nick at ancestralsources dot com

Many thanks

Nick

I'm working with Nick off Forum regarding this issue.

Updated Nick today with: Have entered 35 Census Returns since the 16th Aug, including 1 for Canada with no problems.

I am a newcomer to FH4 and AS  having previously used TMG7. One of the reasons for change was the availability of AS but I too have seen this message a number of times.
The latest was today, entering 1861 census data. I think the sequence as follows:
Entered Head and Spouse OK and then first child. This included an incorrect occupation for this date so I started typing the correct one in the grid which it tried to autocomplete - incorrectly - so I typed in spaces (one or two I think) to change 'File cutter J' to just 'File Cutter'. I then tabbed to Born column at which point error appeared. After clearing the message, it sometimes returns immediately but may take a second or so. If I remove the selected individual then all is OK and I can proceed as if there had been no error.
From previous times, my feeling is that it has involved the use (or misuse!?) of spaces in the occupation column but I cannot be certain.

When the error message is removed by clicking OK, it will often not return until the mouse is hovered over the occupation column for the last person on the grid (the one whose data was being entered at the time of the error). It will always reappear when mouse is hovered over this occuption column even when the cursor is in the Born column.

Not sure if any of this may help but I will try some more checking when I have time.

Regards

Hi

Thanks for that. I believe that this error is fixed in the new version of Ancestral Sources which is currently being beta tested and should be released soon.

Best wishes

I look forward to the new version. I have to say that it is an excellent program and such an aid to consistent data entry.
