Saving custom diagrams as PDF

Post by pwe » 04 Jul 2010 21:52

I am using version 4.1.3
I have several custom diagrams saved. They are named Census or occupation etc
When I view one of these custom diagrams and then try to save it as a PDF I am automatically offered a file name to save it as. If I accept this file name I get a warnig 'error creating file- syntax incorrect' and I am also unable to use the 'browse' button as it is inoperative.
The file name offered is typically C:Documents and SettingsPeterMy DocumentsFamily Historian Projectsevans-scottevans-scott.fh_data'Census' - Thomas EVANS and Roseanna DAVIES.pdf
If I manually delete the quotes around the custom diagram name [in this case census] then all is well, the diagram is saved and the browse button can be used although it is not needed.

If I save as a PDF a standard diagram then there are no such problems.

So my question is why does FH automatically offer a save path for the custom diagrams which is not acceptable? Do others have this problem or is it something to do with my installation?

many thanks for any help received

FH simply offers the name you gave the Custom diagrams. If you avoid using invalid filename characters in the Custom diagram names you won't get this problem.

Jane
The problem is that I did not put the inverted commas around the custom diagram title. I simply used normal letters eg census or occupation. The inverted commas just appear in the file path presumably put there by FH.
Also if I view a custom diagram then the title at the top of the screen gives the name of the custom diagram (with inverted commas) plus the name/names of the diagram root. Again these inverted commas are added by FH.
So it does seem that, in the case of custom diagrams, FH offers a file path that is not acceptable.
Does anyone have any comments on this? Are others able to save a custom diagram as a PDF using the proffered file path?

I think there may be some confusion here.

If you select Save Diagram as... and select pdf file you get the Save as pdf file dialogue. Clicking OK you should then get the Print dialogue with the FH pdf printer selected. Clicking OK again brings up the following printer dialogue box:

FH seems to offer the most recently used file name but didn't put any quotes around the file name when I tried this. Is this what you are seeing or do you get a different set of dialogues?

I agree with Peter E (pwe) that there does seem to be a bug.

When I save a diagram as a Custom Diagram Type, the Custom Diagram Name I enter is then inserted into the window title bar in double quotes.  I then cannot save the diagram as a PDF file unless I change the suggested filename, for the reasons Peter mentioned above.  Exactly the same thing happens when I view a Custom Diagram - the Custom Diagram Name appears in double quotes in the window title bar and in the subsequent suggested filename if I try to save as PDF.

Gerry,
Yes I do what you said and I end up with the screen that you show. The file name offered by FH is as in my original post. In the file path suggested Fh has added inverted commas around the name of my custom diagram in this case I had called the custom diagram census (without any inverted commas).
The way around this is to manually edit the offered file path and remove the inverted commas. Then all is well and the diagram saves as PDF ok. The browse button at this point in inoperative (but not greyed out) so this cannot be used to select another file path.

Peter R
You have it exactly.

Thanks all

Gerry,
I meant to add that this save only fails in this manner if you are using a custom diagram, standard diagrams save ok.

Yep, saving the diagram as a Custom Diagram and then 'printing' to pdf does indeed bring up the name (of the custom diagram) in quotes. One for Calico Pie, I think.

There has been no comment from Calico Pie on this yet. Does Simon normally monitor this forum or do I need to advise him of the thread?

I believe you need to advise him of the problem at support@family-historian.co.uk.
