I'm new to Family Historian and for the life of me I can't figure out how to show the name prefix, name suffix, and nickname in the focus window. How do I do that?
Thanks!

You can't currently customise the Focus Window to do that, but you could customise the Property Box if you wanted.

Jane,
That is too bad. I've used 3 other programs before coming to FH and they all supported this. I've added comments to wish list item 429 about having an option to include these on the focus window tabs, but maybe it should be a separate item or maybe the name of 429 should be changed. In any case, it doesn't have a very high score as far as wish list items go. I really hope the developers can include this in an upcoming release. In the meantime I guess I'll add these to the NAME field itself so that they do appear. For example 'Cap. Levi /Henshaw/ Jr' seems to work fine. I can't see a reason for having these fields in the property box if they don't show up anywhere on the focus window tabs and in reports and diagrams.
Thanks!

Jane,
Just to see what it would look like, I tried customizing the property box by adding a new custom field.
Here is how I defined the new field:

This is what is defined in the 'more' portion of the NAME field:

However, when I look at the results, the name prefix and name suffix do not show up in my custom field on the MAIN tab.

What am I doing wrong?
Thanks

Hi Bill,
I think what you need to do is remove the tick from the 'show commonly used items only' box at the bottom of the 'customize property box' dialogue. This makes available a '' option which if you select and move accross to the right hand side should enable you to add extra custmisable fields to the proerty box main tab.
Hope this helps [smile]
Cheers

Hi again Bill!
Just realised you must have got as far as my last suggestion yourself - should have read your post more closely! However you might try INDI.NAME[1].SPFX as a data reference this seems to give me an extra field on the main tab if this is what you want? See below
Cheers

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the reply. I had added the prefix the way you had and then I came across the field called INDI.NAME[1]:ADORNED.
According to the help, this field is 'Given name and surname, preceded by name prefix, if any, and followed by name suffix, if any.'.
I thought this would be perfect because I could add this field and remove the NAME field and I would still have the same number of fields in the property box.
But, when I can't get the field to actually show the previx and suffix. It shows the same thing as the NAME field.
Hoping someone has an idea on what I'm doing wrong.
Thanks!

Bill,
Another possibility, which would avoid the (slight) hassle of customizing the Property Box, is to amend the Caption for the Individual Property Box. Have a look at the Help for Property Box Captions. As it says, the default caption is:You could enter instead something like:

That is a really nice solution... I like that a lot. Space in the property box is at such a premium that any alternative to adding fields there is a plus.
Now we just need to convince the developers to add an option to show these fields in the Focus Window.
Thanks again!

Hi Peter,
Just a note. I changed this a little because I was only getting the first given name, not all given names and also I like to have the nickname before the surname.
So... I used this and it gave me just what I was looking for.
Individual: %INDI.NAME.NPFX% %INDI.NAME:GIVEN_ALL% (%INDI.NAME.NICK%) %INDI.NAME:SURNAME% %INDI.NAME.NSFX% [=RecordId()]
I am further amazed at the ability to customize things in FH.
Thanks again!

How can I get the 'alternate name' to show in the main tab.
By using %INDI.NAME.NICK% I can get the Nickname to show cannot seem to find the data reference for alternate name.

Have you tried:
Code: Select all
%INDI.NAME[2]%-
