FH4 Crashing when trying to attach photos
I am new to FH having previously been using Generations for 10 years and having imported my whole file via GEDCOM which worked relatively well. I have been trying to upload photos of my relatives and everytime I reach the point of uploading them (or attaching them) the whole program shuts down without any warning or message. Has anyone else suffered from this or does anyone have any solutions?

What version of V4 are you using. You can find this from the help/about screen. If you are not on 4.1.3 I would recommend downloading and installing that first to see if that helps.

FH4 Crashing when trying to attach photos
Hi Jane
Thanks for replying so quickly. I am upgraded to the latest version today the 4.1.3.1 version and it is still happening. It is amazing how quickly it happens - I get to the point of selecting the photo and the whole FH page and My pictures page disappear!

FH4 Crashing when trying to attach photos
Hi, can you describe exactly what (and how) you are doing, might give us a clue as to what's going on?
What version of Windows are you using?
Have you set up your main file as an FH project?
Might be worth creating a new GED file from scratch with just one or two people in it and then trying to attach a photo to one of the people, see if it still crashes. That at least might eliminate any 'funnies' with the GED file you've imported.

I have seen this once before, but I believe the issue was actually caused by an extension to the Windows Explorer interface. I don't think we got to the bottom of it as the users system 'died' and on rebuild the problem went away.

I'm no computer expert but recently my pc kept crashing when creating panoramas with Photoshop Elements 6.Then I noticed the same happened when I was creating large tree diagrams in FH4 (I do have the upgrade Jane mentioned) . After much correspondence with PhotoRadar and ElemementsVillage forums I received the advice to ensure my Nvidia graphics card was updated (free and very easy download).I was also advised to check my Virtual memory was 150%of my pc's RAM. This I changed to 6Gb from just over 2Gb and from that moment on no crashes in either FH or PSE6. Apologies if nothing at all to do with this problem but I felt it was worth sharing.

FH4 Crashing when trying to attach photos
Thanks for your hints everyone. I have a brand new computer with all the latest versions of software. My son thinks he may have worked out a way of keeping the photos and programme open but have not tried it myself yet. The method I have used has been by following the exact insturctions from the from the downloadable FH 4 Instruction Book.

I have the same problem as mentioned above. I try to add multimedia, eg a picture. I browse but never get as far as even reaching a jpeg before FH crashes back to the desktop and disappears. Running Windows XP, SP3. There are no entries in the Windows Event Log. Can anyone help? Thanks.
Gerald.

Make sure you have the latest version of FH, eg 4.1.3, as although the issue was not a Family Historian one, I think they may had added an exception catch.
As far as I am aware, the problem is an XP problem which is caused by a program other than Family Historian attaching to the Explorer process.
Try copying just the image you want to a folder on it's own and then attaching it.

FH4 Crashing when trying to attach photos
Hi Jane
Thanks for your reply. I am not operating on XP I have a new computer running on Windows 7. My son also recommended that I download from a specific folder which I will try. I must say I have sort of lost interest for a while and will try to get back onto the photos.
Kind regards

Thanks Jane, but no joy. I tried booting in Safe Mode, but that did not work either. Fortunately, I have an older second PC and can attach images there.
I must add that I have come from Family Tree Maker 2006 [although I tried FTM 2010] and FH is so vastly superior.
Regards,
Gerald.
