Family Historian User Group

Hi Everyone.

My dad died suddenly last week. His main hobby was genealogy. He'd been using family historian 4 and has built up a lot of data. The way he uses this is by opening a gedcom file and then sticking a usb stick in which houses all the pictures and certificates.

His wish was to put all this in to a book form...pictures and all get it printed properly. I See family tree maker has that facility (So I believe)....but it seems a massive task transferring it from one program to another.

Its been suggested that I put a post on here to see if anyone can undertake this task.

I don't mind paying a fair price or if someone could suggest someone that would be a great help.

Sorry to hear about you Dad. I can understand you wanting to do as he wished, but it might be a mammoth task. Is paying someone else to do it an option? There may be experienced/professional genealogists who could make sense of it all for you.

Some programs do have a 'book' facility. However in my opinion they are really not very satisfactory. The computer automatically extracts the sentences from the data and sometimes they are either no what you would want, or else very stilted. Even if you got a program to produce a book, I'm sure it would need heavy editing to make it readable.

I've been asking around on the net and various other places and none have simple answers for my request. I can't let this go so looks like I have to take the hard path.... learn FH and FTM. My Dad did so much work on it it'll be awful just to leave it. Thanks for your advice!

It might be worth looking at Ancestral Author, it can either produce a pdf format document for you with as many inserts of pictures, charts etc as you want, or if you prefer you can save it as a text document which will contain the information from your ged file, but allow you to edit it and then perhaps save it as a Word document with inserts.

It might take a bit of messing around to get what you want, but I use it when I want to give information to relatives ina format they can understand.

I have only been with FH for a few weeks but have been very impressed by the knowledge of users.   My records have been at a more limited level but I would suggest getting something down on hard copy in the near future.  Some ten years ago I went on an extended foreign holiday and ran everything off to be stored in a lever arch file - just in case.
I am visiting the widow of a cousin this week so have printed the 'descendants of...', our mutual GGG Grandfather, complete with 36 photographs over 10 x A4 pages for her.
I would expect that your Father intended leaving something which would be readable by his descendants.    I solved that some 5 years ago by writing my memoir(140pp x A5)which I produced for my children and grandchildren.   Perhaps you could do the same from the information left - what about his life and yours?   I suppose the moral is that we should never leave things until it is too late.
