I want to merge two people but they're in different files. I don't want to merge the whole file just these two. The reason is I've typed a lot of data and source information into the person's record in one file and I don't want to have to repeat it all in the other file. Is there a way of merging just these two individuals?

Merging two people from different files
If you are on V4, just use the Export option (or the split tree in V3) to create file with just that person and then use the file merge to merge the small file to the main one.
You can in theory just use the merge direct and tell it to ignore all the other people, but doing an export or split makes the process easier.
Out of interest why do you have two files with overlapping people?

You can use the Split Tree Helper dialog on a copy of the file from which you wish to remove the relevant Individual, or (if using FH v4) you can use Export GEDCOM File to export a copy of the relevant Individual (and any linked records, e.g. Sources, Note records, etc.) into a separate GEDCOM file. You can then merge that new file with the other file containing the relevant Individual, taking care to merge any Sources, etc., as well as the Individual.
Whichever method you use, you also need to delete the Individual record from the first file, or else you risk having two inconsistent versions for the same person. Any Source and Note records linked only to that Individual should also be deleted unless they are likely to be linked to other records.

Thank you for your help. I will follow the instructions given. The reason I have the same person on both files is because, although I had a name, spouse and marriage date on my main file for Ann ----, there were two persons with the same name born in the same village only 7 months apart and I had no idea which Ann was the correct person. I keep a separate database called - Possible Relatives. I entered both the Anns into that database and added information to them as necessary. This has been over several years. Now I know which is the correct person I want to transfer all the relevant data with the person instead of having to type it all in again. I'm using vs 4 Thanks again for all the help.
