Help with a query to sort out a problem

Post by davidm_uk » 11 May 2010 14:03

Was about to move some multimedia files around into a new structure to make them easier to find. Opened 'work with external files' to remind myself how this works and found that I had a whole load of entries with a X agaist them. Further investigation shows that I have quite a few source records with two multimedia objects linked to them, one of which shows the file in the correct place (in the project folders), but the other is where it was originally (and is no longer there).

Dunno how it happened, but I need to remove all the old (incorrect)objects. I'd like to be able to produce a query to list all the links associated with each source record, then somehow delete the incorrect links. Below is a screen capture of one such source record:

Being a bit of a novice with queries can someone help me out with one please, or suggest another way of getting rid of these incorrect entries.

I think you will find that if you select the 'Multimedia Object' header (that you don't want) and hit Delete it will be ---- deleted!

I might be tempted to simply do a query for multimedia objects, which have d: in the file name, that will give you a quick list of them, you can then use the View/Record Links to check the attached source and delete the media record if every thing is OK all from the query results.

The alternate is to do a query for the Sources shown the first two multimedia records and then filtering to exclude those with only one linked media record.

True, but that will mean trawling though a LOT of source records to find those with the incorrect entries and then deleting each one individually.

I was hoping to find a cleverer way, but maybe there isn't one.

I've managed to create a query that lists all of the source records that contain a file link to the incorrect place, and I can delete the link to the file that way, but have not found a way of deleting the Multimedia Object header and both the correct and incorrect one have the same title. If I could also get the query to display the record id (402 in the example shown) then I might be able to delete just that record.

I'm still playing with it!

I think Jane has now suggested a way round your problem.

Jane, Gerry,

Thank you both. I'm making some progress now!
