360 and still going....!

Post by rt » 01 May 2010 19:01

After a few weeks of using A.S. I thought I’d add a summary view to the forum posts.

I’ve used FH since the initial versions, and Gedcom Census fairly soon after its birth. However, I’ve never used the autotext facility, nor have I attached images.

After A.S. was launched I was keen to use it, but after making a couple of entries, I wondered whether this might also be the time to revise my census approach. Needless to say, many early entries of the census events had been done manually, and my preferred approach had changed over time! Eventually I decided to replace all the census entries using A.S. and:
•      Use “method 1” (I’d been using method 2 previously);
•      Attach images (which are stored on a NAS, rather than on my laptop);
•      Use the autotext feature.

To date I’ve created over 360 new census sources (each with one or two images), and although I’ve still got the ’41 and the ’01 censuses outstanding, I thought the time for this post had arrived.

I’m very pleased with the results, which would have been horrendous to achieve without A.S.. The whole exercise has been worthwhile, and all my new census entries have a high level of consistency.

If I’ve encountered any issues with A.S I can say they’re very minor, and none has put me off progressing with the task (the majority have been posted here). Using A.S. for so many entries in a short time span also meant that any repetitive keystrokes / mouse clicks using A.S. became obvious, so my comments were mailed to Nick for consideration (all ergonomic points were around the image window layout & configuration).

If other FH users are in a similar position, I can say that replacing census entries is a lot of keyboard tapping & mouse clicks, but is quite achievable – and the results will be worthwhile. Some thought with the structure of the image template and the names of files is beneficial at the outset, which may also ease the data entry task.

My thanks goes to Nick, not just for a very good first version of A.S., but also for the very prompt & helpful responses to all queries I’ve raised (both on this forum and directly via email).

Thanks for your kind words. I'm amazed you've managed to get so many done.

It is exactly one month ago today (30 days) that Ancestral Sources was released and I've been really pleased with the overwhelmingly positive comments. There have been just short of 1,100 downloads in that time which is surprisingly high. I've also had a few donations already which is great and really helps to spur me on whenever my enthusiasm for the project begins to wane.

Best wishes

Nick
