Hope some one can help.
When I download files from the Internet to my C: drive they don't show in Windows Explorer. When I search C: the file is not found.
If I try to resave the file name appear's and I get the Overwrite message.
I've found a temp work round by saving to a USB stick listed as F: then moving the file across to the C: drive.

Are you using Internet Explorer with Protected Mode On - it will say at the bottom of the Internet Explorer status bar. I believe this restricts the places that files can be downloaded to in order to protect your computer. Downloading to your documents or other folders under your profile should work fine. Its a good thing to have on in order to protect your computer. I use IE8 with protected mode on and I've not found any need to turn it off so far. If you really need to save a file somewhere outside of your profile than you could turn it off and then put it back on afterwards.

Protection mode has always been on.
This problem started on Thursday.
Example: I'm downloading from Ancestry to C:UsersSteveFamily HistoryBMDMumMarriage.
Have been using this setup for years on Xp and for the last few months on WIN7, (which is giving the problem). IE8 on both PC's.

I can't explain why the problem has just started but try:
Open IE8, click Tools -> Internet Options -> Security -> Trusted Sites
Click Sites.
Untick 'Require server verification'
Add http://*.ancestry.com
and http://*.ancestry.co.uk
(Not sure which addresses you need - it needs to be the same domain that the image download comes from).

Problem occurs with every site I try, even trusted sites and encripted files, Ancestry was just an example.
I think the problem lies with the Hard drive not IE8.
I'm using my Xp PC at the moment.

I had similar problems, I couldn't download AS or any other downloads from this site or access pdf files on another site. I wondered if it might be one of the many w7 updates. So I tried using a different browser and the problem disappeared. Try it, if it then works it will prove there is nothing wrong with your PC.

Tried Firefox but couldn't load the Ancestry Enhanced Viewer, going round in circles. [frown]
Tried Opera, downloaded file ok but didn't like the Browser. [rolleyes]
So I'm still stuck with IE8 but now have a bit better understanding of the problem. [frown]
Thanks for your help.
I've emailed Microsoft for help.

Have you tried Google Chrome browser - I've been using it for several months now and find it much better than IE8. Admittedly I'm on XP Home and your problems may be more to do with W7 than your browser. But I recommend Chrome anyway.

Will keep that in mind but I'll wait to see what Microsoft have to say.

I am using Firefox with the Enhanced Ancestry viewer, it was a little more to do than just a mouse click to download and setup but if you follow the instructions you should be ok.

I did exactly what they said and waited 30 minutes while messages in the bottom left hand corner flashed 'Receiving', 'Transferring' among other messages.

Microsoft support team sent me an email yesterday with instructions to try. Emailed back stating fault not cleared. They have just emailed me telling me fault has been passed to Microsoft Research.

Research phoned this morning to discuss fault and request remote access to my Laptop. Spent 2 hours watching them go through my system, it was amazing. Pointer flying around and screens popping up all over the place. All the time getting a running commentory from the guy on the end of the phone.
Old files I thought I had deleted months ago appearing in Windows Explorer, (so don't think those files you deleted have gone). He checked my wireless connection, router and access to the broadband. All the other hardware connections and relevant software setups.
He diagnosed fault to Ancestry's Enhanced Viewer, which he proved three times by various means. Downloaded files are appearing as Virtualized files in the Temporary Internet Files folder and not being copied/moved across to the intended folder. When the Enhanced Add-on was disabled I could download files from the internet and save anywhere on my PC. As soon as it was enabled the fault reappeared.
So fault not cleared, I have to contact vendor of software and inform them of Microsofts input.
But Heck! my Laptop and Broadband run faster, bootup more than twice as quick and 8GB of space reclaimed on my Harddrive.

I managed to clear the fault today but I've fiddled with so many setting on my PC I don't know how I cured it.
Had to go out so shut down. Booted up, tried a test download and bish, bash, bosh, there was the test file sitting on my desktop. [smile]
