Changing a record Id.

Post by baronbri » 03 May 2003 21:19

Is there anyway I can change a record Id? I had placed my grand-daughter, who was record Id 5 in a list of 12 individuals, with the wrong daughter!! I deleted her individual record and then placed her with the right daughter. However, she is now record Id 13 and I can't seem to fill in an individual for record Id 5. I can't help feeling the list is now 'untidy' with the missing number!

ID:45

As you only have 12 people, you could renumber the whole file using the Tools work with record IDs.  Failing that you could renumber the file using a text editors search and replace.

One other thing, you did not need to delete the person to move her,  all you need to do is right click on the child in the family and select unlink and then select add family as child and link her to the correct family.

Thank you Jane for the help. The 'unlink'solution I read in the manual..... but after I'd deleted my granddaughter! But I shall try the re-numbering solution. Having been a Maths teacher for 30 years I hate to see the gaps in the numbers!!

What's the gap between 0 and 1? ;)

Seriously, IDs are that; just IDs. They could be 'xyz', 'aaa', 'gts', etc., if the standard allowed it.

So long as they are unique, that really is all that matters. It's just convenient for the program to allocate them sequentially. If you ever get to several thousand records in your tree, renumbering them would be a task, and accomplishes nothing.

Sooner, rather than later, you will add a rogue entry that you will want to delete. The time is better spent researching and letting the software do 'its thing'.

Not meant as criticsm, but as a bit of friendly advice. :)

Changing a record Id.

I had this problem with sources and I, like you, found it untidy. With FH version 2.1 there is a way to re-number any of the ids (individual, source, note record etc).
Click on TOOLS
then WORK WITH RECORD IDENTIFIERS
RECORD TYPE
select INDIVIDUAL (or whichever you wish to alter)
select TASK GENERATE NEW RECORD IDs BY RE-NUMBERING RECORDS FROM 1
then click on PERFORM TASK

This should sort out the problem for you.
