Hi Nick
Thanks for Ancestral Sources, it's a fantastic program and in my opinion FH wouldn't be complete without it!
I recently upset it recently though! When amending one of the fields I had selected, I think I backspaced too many times and it kept throwing up the following error box, which I kept closing. Even when I added other individuals after that, the box popped up again! I eventually managed to enter everyone and close all the error boxes and saved the entry. To my amazement it had actually recorded correctly and displayed in FH. It had however closed the project database. I know it was my fault, just thought you might want to know how users can mess up!!

It doesn't entirely surprise me as a few similar grid related errors appeared and were fixed during beta testing. I don't suppose you have any idea which year and which column the problem was with? I don't have AS with me at work to look at this until later but can you repeat the error? If so can you explain the steps required.
Thanks and apologies for the problem which obviously shouldn't have happened.
Regards
Nick

Thanks for your reply Nick.
I think it was 1891 and the occupation field, but I cannot seem to reproduce the error at the moment. Will keep trying and let you know if I manage to replicate the error message.
I am on Windows 7 and using FH4, AS Method 1.

Nick, I have finally managed to replicate this error (not deliberately, I hasten to add!). These are the steps I took:
Entering 1871 Census information:
Entered Head, his wife and first son - adding ages, occupations and where born to each.
Entered second son changed occupation from 'Coachman' to 'Groom'.
Then selected daughter in law via name search;
Added 'daughter in law' to relation column.
Clicked in occupation which read: 'Dressmakers Apprentice' typed in 'Dressmaker[space]' (to get rid of previous occupation.
Threw up error box : DataGrid View Default Error Dialog
System. ArguementException: DataGridViewComboBoxCell value is not valid. To replace this default dialog please handle the DataError event
Pressed ok and came up with same error message, tried closing box, but error message caught in loop.
Did notice that the persons occupation had changed to Coachman (from Dressmaker).
Closed AS.
Reopened AS performed the same again and got the same message.
Closed and reopened AS and repeated down to daughter in laws occupation and typed in 'Dressmaker' [then used delete key and not space].
Worked perfectly.[smile]
Hope this helps you to identify the problem.

No I'm not getting that error when I try to replicate it by having people with the same occupations in my file. I wonder if any other A.S. users can see if they can replicate it following your example?
Thanks
Nick

I have sent you a PM with screen shot step recording, showing how I got this error message.
I tried it with a different census year. I seems that the problem occurs when you change the occupation, then space, then tab to the next field.

Thank you for your excellent set of steps. I couldn't reproduce the problem at first. But I noticed that your error report suggested that you hit Shift+Tab rather than Tab and I do now get the error when I do that and can reproduce it everytime.
e.g.
1901 census
Choose individual
Enter occupation x
Shift+Tab
Tab
re-enter occupation as x
Shift+Tab-->Error
I've also had the error now using Tab if I've removed a row. So hopefully this will be enough for me to work out what's happening.
Many thanks
Nick

Thanks Debbie
I couldn't completely work out what was going wrong, but I saw something in my coding which didn't look quite right even though it seems to work fine (usually). So I slightly changed the way I handle the text entered into a drop-down list cell and I now can't reproduce the error. So who knows, perhaps this will fix the issue for good and also the
similar error reported by Steve Bye.
So hopefully will all be fixed in the next version which I will be beta testing in a matter of days all being well.
Debbie: if you would be happy to try out the beta test version, when it is ready, to see if your problem is fixed please drop me an email to Nick AT AncestralSources DOT com
Best wishes and thanks to you (and Steve) for helping to track the problem down.
Nick
